What do you feel USD 428 should do to help the increasing number of students dealing with mental health issues?

We should make parents and caregivers aware of the resources available, both within the district and community. We should also ensure the district has adequate support staff to support those students needing help, and train teachers to recognize the symptoms. Additionally, we should educate and encourage students to look out for one another and reduce the stigma of seeking help.

Are you in favor of USD 428 providing preschool for all students and moving 6th graders to the middle school? Explain.

Of course, reaching children early through preschool will help better prepare them for their school careers and increase their chance for success. The current middle school curriculum and the changing demands of sixth grade make these students ready to learn at a higher level.

Do you support allowing private and home-schooled students to participate in USD 428 activities, i.e. sports, etc.? Explain.

Yes, provided they are qualified both in the activity and academically, and they pay the same fees as public school students.

Do you believe that evolution or creationism should be taught in public schools in Kansas? Explain your answer.

I believe we should nurture an inquisitive mind, and teach our children to always seek the truth regardless if it’s what they want to hear. As an education system, we should give students the tools to observe and investigate nature without telling them what they have to find.

What do you feel USD 428 should do to help the increasing number of students dealing with mental health issues?

We need to hire more school psychologist to help identify students dealing with mental health issues. I feel our teachers who see the students everyday also need to have some sort of training on how to spot students that are struggling with issues so they can be referred on for help from the school psychologist. I also feel that our district needs to make our families and students aware of resources that are available.

Are you in favor of USD 428 providing preschool for all students and moving 6th graders to the middle school? Explain.

Yes and yes. I think with today's changing world the more kids can learn the better off they will be so if we are able to provide preschool for all students in our district it will help them in the long run. As far as moving the 6th grade to the middle school, I think it is a great idea. Students in the 6th grade are so much more advanced now days and moving them out of the grade school and spending 3 years in middle school will help them transition to high school.

Do you support allowing private and home-schooled students to participate in USD 428 activities, i.e. sports, etc.? Explain.

I believe students that are in private or home schools have a right to participate in school activities, but there should be some sort of fee for the activity/sport for the students and they must be eligible in other classes to be able to participate in USD 428 activities.

Do you believe that evolution or creationism should be taught in public schools in Kansas? Explain your answer.

I think it should be taught but then let each student decide for themselves how they feel and believe.
