What would be your top three priorities if elected?

My top three priorities are bringing accountability to spending and transparency on how funds are used, building a scholarship program similar to Missouri’s A+ program, and improving teacher and administration relations.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

As a former auditor now working as a consultant for companies going thru change, I bring a wealth of knowledge about prudent spending and improving processes that impact the overall operations of the organization.

I feel my background will take JCCC forward as it moves beyond the President Sopcich era.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

College should be accessible to all, by providing a scholarship program similar to Missouri’s A+ program I believe it will allow more students to attend JCCC which will bring about diversity. The program would be geared towards students who earn at least a 2.5 GPA, have a 95% attendance rate and complete 50 hours of community service. Additionally I would like to make sure every student feels safe on the campus by having inclusion town halls.

Personal Biography I grew up in a low-income family in Iowa, but had access to strong public schools. Because of that, I was able to go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with minors in sociology: social work, and music. I worked with teenagers and young adults with disabilities for a few years before going on to graduate school, where I studied special education, and educational policy and leadership studies. What would be your top three priorities if elected?

My first priority is to ensure that JCCC is affordable for students and families in Johnson County. I know firsthand what having access to education gave to me and my family, and how it has allowed me to give back to my community. I want to ensure those opportunities are available for the next generation. My second priority is to expand on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at the school. My third priority is to improve transparency and communication between school administration and various community stakeholders. Faculty trust in administration has decreased dramatically over the past few years, and several recent decisions have left some with the impression that the school is dismissive of community members’ concerns.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

My background in education includes teaching at all levels, K-12 and college, including working with students with a wide range of disabilities. I also spent several years studying educational policy and leadership studies, with an emphasis on the intersection of race, class and gender with education, at the University of Iowa. This background makes me a strong candidate for, and would give me a unique perspective on, the Board of Trustees.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

Until September 2001, JCCC had a dedicated resource to support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, as many community colleges throughout the country do. In speaking with several faculty members, there have been requests that JCCC bring back this type of resource. With President Sopcich’s recent resignation announcement, the Board has an opportunity to search for a new president who will prioritize DEI efforts and work to create a dedicated DEI resource to help the school become more inclusive.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

First, I will make efforts to sustain the current success of the College by being an engaged leader. To ensure a positive impact on our students, faculty, staff, board and community, I will work to continue JCCC's tradition of excellence by supporting the mission, vision, values and strategic goals.

Next, continued pursuit of relevant educational offerings that prepare students for jobs of the future and are responsive to the workforce needs of our community are a priority of mine.

Finally, supporting all students in their educational journey by providing them with the support they need to engage and succeed is vital.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

My civic involvement shows that I care about and have been active in various aspects of Johnson County. My business experience also qualifies me to serve. I've worked for a small business in Johnson County for 18 years. As a member of the business community, I understand the importance of a programming in response to workforce needs. Finally, I understand the value of Community Colleges. My college experience started with taking night classes at Highland Community College while I was in high school. That allowed me to accumulate college credits at a price point that worked for my family.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

Johnson County Community College should continue to strive to cultivate a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. Offering multiple student organizations and making efforts to engage all students with a productive learning experience will enhance their success.

Personal Biography I am a lifelong Kansan. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and we have three amazing children, and 5 perfect grandchildren. A great deal of my background has been tied to education professionally and in my personal time. I taught three years at ESU, my husband was a career educator and our three children benefited from the College Now program at JCCC. My dedication to education and my willingness to serve is well documented. I am a public servant, first and foremost.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

Fiscal efficiency- This means identifying the right long-term investments to make for the future of the institution, as well as sustainability for taxpayers. Sustainability comes from continuing to provide attractive offerings and innovative approaches to education, while striking the right balance between investment and return.

Relationships-Relationships are responsive. JCCC has the need for responsive relationships both internally and externally, and cultivating them, or failure to do so, has real impact on the institution.

Institutional Excellence- Institutional excellence is essential to the future of the college. Our students must experience a better education then they expected. Staff and administration must feel valued beyond their compensation level. The surrounding community must be informed and surprised by the excellence of their asset. When we accomplish those things through specific and targeted practices, sustainability and growth of the college is ensured.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

I am seeking re-election to the JCCC Board because I believe quality education has been the most powerful driver of growth in Johnson County, and preservation of both education and growth are essential and at a pivotal point. Our community and economic development has been shaped by the impact of access to all stages of education and the development of an educated workforce. I have participated on numerous committees and boards and believe my leadership experiences, both current and past, will continue to provide the groundwork for me to help guide the relationship between the community and Johnson County Community College. A great deal of my background has been tied to education, both professionally and in my personal time. More recently, my experience at Olathe Medical Center related to institutional complexity and how our essential community institutions work to serve and identity the needs of many diverging groups. I see the needs of JCCC in much the same way.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

Over the past three years, with a growing diverse student population, the Ruffalo Noel Levitz Student satisfaction inventory (Spring, 2018) has shown an increased score in "Responsiveness to Diverse Population". Our diversity includes students of diverse ethnicity, non-traditional students, blind and deaf students, veterans, students in the Clear program, and access services, among others. Our programs, clubs and courses provide diverse offerings, as do our performances offered through the performing arts. One suggestion would be to listen to our students through focus groups sponsored by our student senate. A student focused questionnaire could provide beneficial feedback on future initiatives. Feedback provided regarding their expectations as new students, following their first semester and first year, with specifically targeted questions would be helpful regarding a number of areas we value, and success is imperative. We want all of our students to feel welcome and safe at JCCC.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

1. Fiscal and budget stability, with a recognition that leadership means prioritizing and balancing wants and needs, including balancing property tax burdens and tuition and fees. 2. Continue the Johnson County tradition of collaborative, non-partisan, civility in governance and leadership, understanding that differences of opinion deserve discussion and debate, not derision. 3. Expand the cooperation between the College and our business community to ensure our credit and continuing education curriculum results in a skilled workforce that can meet the needs of the 21st century.

These principles and priorities haven't changed in the 8 years I have served on the Board.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

I have experience in public service (with Senator Kassebaum, on the Overland Park City Council, and on the JCCC Board for the past eight years), the private sector (as an attorney advising private business women and men) and virtually every kind of non-profit, community-oriented charitable cause (raising money for Sunflower House, scholarships and church). I understand that our economic strength doesn’t just happen – it requires collaboration between education, business and government. Much has been accomplished in the last eight years since I was first elected – our budget is tighter and more sustainable, we’ve established accountability measures and our student focus, we’re improving our physical facilities and classrooms, we’ve recruited, rewarded and retained excellent faculty, we’ve achieved re-accreditation, and we’ve maintained stable enrollment in a strong economy. I'm invested in this College and this community. I work hard and ask questions. My experience matters.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

JCCC is already a very diverse institution, in terms of faculty, staff, administration and recent Board membership. Our student population is more diverse than Johnson County demographics, with a growing Hispanic population and a strong group of international students. We are a welcoming campus, with a variety of student clubs and a clear non-discrimination policy. We recently expanded our policy to include gender identity. It is also critical for JCCC and any higher education institution to ensure that diversity includes the opportunity to learn from, respect and discuss with those whose viewpoints differ from our own. Too often discussions become debates and become controversies that divide instead of inform and teach. I am committed to continuing our efforts to ensure all points of view are respected and all people can feel welcome and supported on our campus. We need to ensure sure diversity is encouraged in our classrooms and relationships across campus.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

Communication and Transparency with all college stakeholders. From decisions to cancel the track program, financial agreements to confrontations with the neighborhoods surrounding the college, the board has not done it’s due diligence to openly communicate with the Johnson County Community. The purpose of a Board of Trustees is to ensure an open relationship between community and institution. There is much work to do in this area to earn back the trust of the community in The Board’s actions.

Transfer agreements with Kansas Universities. Ensuring that our students' college credits get transferred to our state universities is important to keeping college costs low. There are several universities that don't accept as many of our college credits as they could. I would like to renegotiate these agreements.

Low tuition costs. Prioritizing our students' financial burdens and ensuring that don't carry unnecessary costs for the pursuit of a college degree.

What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you for this position?

I'm an educator myself and the daughter of a culinary instructor who has worked at the college for more than a decade. I also had the opportunity to work as an instructor in the college's community outreach arm. I feel I have a good balance of inside and outside perspectives about the college. As an educator I've worked as an instructional Coach, Curriculum Director and classroom teacher. Those various roles have given me an appreciation for the complexity of the education process. I've learned that asking question is more important than any other skill. Through my training and experience as an Instructional Coach I've honed my skills to take an inquiry approach to understanding how decisions are derived. I think more questions need to be asked of the College's current administration.

How would you suggest JCCC address diversity issues for the most positive outcome?

I've worked exclusively in schools where the student body is more diverse than the faculty. I've worked with educators and administrators to address diversity, equity and inclusion in our policies, curriculum and future plans. With an institution as big as Johnson County Community College, I think it's important to re-create a department or director of DEI that can ensure that diversity is at the forefront of campus coordination not a last thought. It's important that the college be pro-active in creating plans that address diversity so that we can make the proper investments in the schools success for all students.
