What do you see as the biggest successes in the Public Schools and what areas do you see could use some study and/ or changes?

Our pubic school system has provided for our children even when experiencing lack of adequate funding. It is because of our belief that all children can succeed and the desire to provide quality education to every child that our students have been able to flourish.

What could use study or change? State and Federal government has created such bureaucracy that funding for schools is limited and tied up in regulations. I would like to see a study done that would reduce regulations coming from State and Federal government so schools have easier access to their monies.

A lot of schools district have not been= able to recruit enough teachers to fill all positions with certified teachers.. Last year the Wichita district had to start the school year with 80 positions filled by long term substitutes . What do you think can be done to perhaps help solve this problem?

My belief is that teachers should be paid adequately for the job they do. Increase funding for teacher salaries. Find ways for student loan forgiveness for teachers who teach in some of the most challenging districts and provide alternative ways for people who have a heart to serve to become a certified teacher.

What strengths do you think you bring that will make you a useful member of the on the Board of Education?

I am a long standing member of the Maize community. I have a master’s degree in education and considerable experience teaching. I have run a construction business and have extensive farming experience in the Maize area. I have also served on the Maize Board of Education in the past. I am a good listener and take in all opinions before making a decision.

What is your view about Kansas state revenue funding going to support tuition to non-Public schools if a family chooses to send their student there?

Non-public schools do not have the same standards as public schools. Any non-public school taking funding away from public schools reduces their ability to do the job they are charged with.

What is your opinion of the Ks Supreme Court’s ruling on the Gannon case about adequate and equitable funding for Kansas Public Schools?

Opinion of supreme court adequate and equitable funding for state schools. I believe that the court has no choice but to provide adequate funding unless they are willing to disregard the State Constitution.

What ideas would you like to have the Board explore to enhance the schools in this district if you are elected?

I would like to see Maize continue to expand the Capturing Kids’ Hearts program to provide adequate social and emotional support to our students, teachers and community. I feel we should continue to explore the best way to provide special education services to our students in need.

What do you think the school district should add or take away from its policies or practices.

What should the school district add or take away from current practices. I would like to see us concentrate more on finding, supporting and maintaining highly qualified staff members to serve our students. Focus on the importance of an outstanding teacher in every classroom.
