1. Why are you running for office and what qualities, training, experience and skills do you bring to this position?

North Miami is my hometown and I continue to work on behalf of my friends and neighbors. I have served on the city council for twenty years and strive to bring strong constituent service to the community. Every call, email, and letter is promptly returned. I'm easily accessible and always provide my direct cell number for those who wish to reach me (305-582-0710). Before I was elected, I worked as an aide to U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek (retired) through the 1990s. I also serve on the board of directors of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. We work to provide access to healthcare for over 1,000,000 patients in over 40 countries.

2. What are the 3 most important issues facing your municipality? For each concern, how do you propose to mitigate/improve/resolve the issue?

1. Affordable housing - The need for affordable housing is emergent across the county. North Miami needs to find ways for working class families to afford to live here. We should examine things like Developer Fees, micro-units, and other cutting edge ideas. We might also sell unused city-owned land and create other incentives.

2. Sea level rise - Another looming issue for us is the threat of global warming and rising water levels. It’s not just a problem for our waterfront communities. Those further inland along canals are also at risk. Already, we can see the effects after hard rains. We need to look at drainage solutions and plan now for what we know the future will bring.

3. Transparency in Government - I’ve repeatedly stood strong against those who try to use your tax money in wasteful or illegal ways. I led the charge to successfully have the State conduct an audit of city finances, assuring that procedures are changed to stem future problems. I’ll continue that charge.
