Oaklyn School District
An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. Why are you running for the board of education (Why are you seeking reelection)? What expertise do you bring?
If elected, what would be your top two or three goals for your first year as a Board member? (If you are an incumbent, what would be your top two or three goals for the first year in this new term?)
What is your view on test scores? What steps will you take to improve these scores (if improvements are needed)?
What measures, if any, do you feel are needed to improve the safety and security of our schools?
What do you think are the top three issues facing the schools in your district?

After I "retired" from the Board at the end of my term in January 2026 as I felt the Board would continue the good work of previous Boards. But I have been disappointed in the direction of the current Board. They seem to abdicate to to the administration that is provided by the Collingswood BOE on a shared services agreement. Some of this service may be best for Collingswood, but not Oaklyn, yet there doesn't seem to be any pushback when necessary. I was a BOE member including president for 30 years, a cofounder of COSC , active in Little League for over 35 years, a board member of NJSBAIG(Insurance for schools) including president for 5 years and represented Oaklyn on the Colls BOE and the Ed ServicesComm.
First to maintain the excellent relationship we currently enjoy with our employees, primarily as a result of our principal. My concern is the less cooperative relationship between the Colls BOE and their employees. Collingswood is a major concern of Oaklyn as we send our pupils in grades 6 to 12 there and have only 1 vote on their Board.
Second to maintain our physical plant in it's current condition. This requires foresight and planning as repair costs will only increase in the future.
Third to help in any way possible in maintaining middle and high school staffs and programs for all students.
I am naturally very concerned with our test scores as I am sure everyone is. I need the help of our professionals in charting a course of improvement for the future and seeing that it is implemented by all concerned. I also believe it is important for our students to have a firm grasp of the basic concepts in subjects before the need to master electronic devices.
I believe our safety and security is strong. I believe we have a very good program as supported by the Oaklyn Police and Fire Departments and the Borough Council. The plan should be constantly reviewed to make certain we keep up with any appropriate improvements in systems or technology.
The top issue facing all schools in New Jersey is funding, or the lack thereof. The State doesn't fulfill their obligations which pushes the expense down to the local districts who are not as well positioned to shoulder the costs. The funding formula should also be updated and I would work with other local districts to lobby the State legislators to bring the formula up to providing an adequate level of funding.
