Audubon School District {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. As a teacher for the last 18 years in 4 different countries I have seen the power of schools to bring communities together. Students spend their formative years connecting with neighbors and classmates as they learn, prepare for a bright future, and discover themselves. Education, career counseling, and self-actualization. I am running to advocate for career and technical education, early childhood expansion and improvement, the protection of the arts, and continuing the tradition of pride and excellence I experienced as a student here.
Learning more from the voting public and about the current situations the board is facing will be my first priority. Working to collaborate with my fellow board members will be my second goal. Ensuring that audubon schools are being well maintained and properly operated is the chief goal of every board member.
I will receive and review these results along with my fellow board members. I will participate in the QSAC board self-evaluation and suggest ideas for resolutions. I believe that tests are an imperfect metric, yet continue to be the best option currently available.
The US has been experiencing a mental health crisis for decades. My generation witnessed Columbine, 9/11, the Iraq war, and the subprime mortgage crisis. As I have learned to utilize music and running to manage daily stress I consider myself blessed to have had amazing mentors at Audubon. I am grateful for all the teachers and coaches that imparted a love of exercise, participation, and self-improvement. While there is a temptation to turn our schools into fortress compounds, I would argue that we must treat the root cause of school violence, isolation. We must provide students with a rich variety of activities with accompanying social groups that allow students to feel connected and loved as part of a village.
1. The emergent financial burden of escalating transportation costs. 2. Technology: Artificial Intelligence, Device use and over-use, Social media's impact on developing brains, the content creator industry and other rapid changes to the modern job market. 3. The need to increase the school budget enough to keep up with inflation. The automatic 2% is insufficient.

My wife Dana and I chose Audubon to raise our two young sons, and I'm carrying that forward. They'll spend the next fifteen years in our schools. I was appointed to the Board in July to fill a vacancy through December, and I'm running to keep doing the work. I've spent fifteen years in healthcare technology, leading large projects where hospital executives, clinicians, and vendors with different priorities have to reach one decision together. That takes listening and asking better questions. I hold an MBA from Johns Hopkins. Since July, I've brought that approach to the district's draft AI policy, digging into the research and bringing specific amendments so the Board gets it right rather than just gets it done.
First, strengthen grades 7 through 12 so Audubon is a district families move here for, K through 12. Our elementary schools are among the best around, and our upper grades are doing more than the ratings show, including 32 AP Scholars this year and four years of upward trend. I want to help carry that work through and make sure the community sees it. Second, finish the district's AI policy well, so students and teachers have clear guidance on how these tools fit into learning. Third, make sure the Board reports back to residents on how we're doing, in plain language, with the real numbers.
Test scores aren't the whole picture, but they are a real measure, and they're what families see first when researching our schools. Public ratings for grades 7 through 12 lean almost entirely on state test proficiency and graduation rate, so those numbers matter for our students and for how Audubon is seen. The district has already started this work, and results like our AP scores are trending up. I'd support focusing time and resources on the grades and subjects where state results lag, giving teachers the support they need, and tracking progress openly at the Board level so the community sees the trend, not just one year's snapshot.
Audubon takes safety seriously, and our students say they feel safe, which is what matters most. I don't think the answer is to pile on more measures for the sake of it. I'd want the Board to review security regularly with the administration instead of only after something happens somewhere, and to keep investing in the counseling side, because a lot of safety is catching problems early. And families should know what's in place and why, without having to go looking for it.
The biggest is the gap between what our upper grades actually do and what the public ratings show. Families researching Audubon see a 3 out of 10 for our junior/senior high school, and that doesn't match what I see at Board meetings. Second is keeping the good teachers we have. Our AP results didn't happen by accident. Third is technology, especially AI. Students are already using it, and the district needs clear rules that help kids learn instead of doing the work for them.
