I think charter schools are a drain on the public school system and I would like to see that diminished or doner away with altogether. I'd rather see local school systems build the kinds of schools designed to meet the needs of those students who need a different style of learning environment. I dislike that we still have a great disparity between wealthy and poorer communities. I think all students should have access to the same programs and activities state-wide. I would support a better funding system rather than simply allowing such disparities to exist. Solving staff shortages could be allowing degreed people to learn to teach.
Funding job training for all who want it and offering a way to include everyone--even those who don't live close to a center. We also need to raise the minimum wage. I would support initiatives to improve oversight of industries that are clearly gouging the citizens of this state and bring them back into line. We should be leading the way instead of fighting to let big business do what it pleases to our citizens. We should look for ways to lift the fortunes of all our citizens, not just those with political access.
I propose a two year moratorium on utility rate increases while we study ways to keep costs down and strengthen our grid. Restructure the public utilities commission so it is non-partisan and not influenced by the power companies and geared towards protecting the citizens. Give businesses stability in energy and they can be better and more efficient. Strengthen our laws regarding waste water and sewage disposal but help those communities who fall short, don't punish them with fines. Have stronger laws regarding removal of water from our aquifers and don't just give it away for pennies on the dollar.
We should not be helping ICE in any way, shape or form. We should demand state oversight of ALL ICE facilities existing in the state. We should be protecting those most vulnerable of the residents of our state, not turning them over to be sent away to who knows where. People should be safe in their home, their car and on their street and it should be illegal to take someone one away when they've followed all the restrictions and demands placed upon them and be taken away without a chance for freedom.
