Community Involvement
Member of Atherton School Board since 2024
I have two sons with special needs who have attended Atherton for their entire educational careers. I began attending all school board meetings and was often the only parent in attendance. The Board appointed me when a vacant seat opened. I have been serving since 2024, gaining firsthand experience with the responsibilities of school board service, including policy, budgeting, curriculum, staffing, and long-term planning.
I was appointed to the Board after being encouraged by its president to apply for a vacant seat. What began as an opportunity to serve has become something I genuinely value. My sons inspired me to become involved, and my experience on the Board has reinforced my belief in the importance of having engaged parents and community members helping shape the future of our schools. I want to continue serving as a voice for students and families while working with the Board, administration, staff and community to support all of our students.
My top priorities are student achievement, supporting our teachers and staff, and responsible long-term planning for the district.
First, I want to make sure every student has the opportunity to learn and succeed, with appropriate support for students who need additional help and appropriate challenges for students who are ready to go further.
Second, I want to support our teachers and staff by making sure they have the resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively. Strong schools depend on attracting and retaining good educators.
Finally, I believe the district needs to make careful, long-term decisions about finances, staffing, facilities and enrollment.
I believe school boards will continue to face the challenge of doing more with limited resources while meeting increasingly diverse student needs. Enrollment changes, staffing shortages, classroom sizes, special education needs, academic achievement and the cost of maintaining our facilities all require thoughtful long-term planning.
I also believe school boards will need to maintain open communication and trust with parents, staff and the community. Not every decision will make everyone happy, but the Board should be willing to explain why decisions are being made, listen to differing perspectives and use reliable information to guide its decisions.
I did not set out to become a school board member. I became involved because I was a parent who cared about my children's education and wanted to understand what was happening in our schools. I started attending Board meetings, asked questions, listened and eventually accepted the opportunity to serve.
Since joining the Board, I have learned that good governance requires more than having strong opinions. It requires listening, asking difficult questions, considering different perspectives, understanding the information behind a decision and being willing to work with others toward solutions.
I care deeply about Atherton schools and the students, families and staff who make up our community and would be honored to continue serving.
