I have been an educator for 35 years. I retired from a 25 year career as an English, French and humanities teacher and administrator for the New York 'City Public Schools. I have worked in administration at the school, district, and higher education levels. I have extensive experience in innovating, funding and sustaining educational initiatives of all sizes and scopes. I earned a PhD in Education in 2010.
The most important responsibility of a school board member is to support the county's schools in delivering the best possible education for our children. Board members support the Superintendent with budgetary decisions to ensure student needs are met. School boards support the Superintendent in identifying grant and other funding sources to sustain, expand and/or innovate programs.
The critical need in our county is money. Right now, grant or other private funding may be the only solution. For example, many parents shared with me that they want a 5-day/week after school program, as well as a 5-day/week program for their kids. Not only would the children benefit from an extended day program, it would also help parents who must work outside of the county and need to pick up their kids later in the day. On another level, we will retain more of our "local" population if we make it possible for parents work outside the county to be able to afford to live here.
We need to pay our teachers more and continue to provide them with the support they need to thrive. Unless we raise teacher pay we will continue to lose them to counties that pay more, such as Buncombe.
Universal Pre-K is a goal that our county needs to strive, Right now, only qualified students may attend. Again, we will have to search for grant and private funding sources to make this a sustainable program for all.
I am many experiences in education that qualify me for this role, but perhaps the most compelling for the current situation is my experience in grant-writing. The public schools are being defunded, so people who know how to find and secure funding are needed more than ever.
