Position/philosophy statement
Throughout my years in public service, I've faced every challenge with the same approach: show up, do the work, and stay focused on delivering real results for North Carolina.

I’m running because I know what it means to grow up watching your parents work multiple jobs just to get by and how powerful a good education and a strong community can be in changing a child’s future. As a mother, a public servant, and a lifelong North Carolinian, I’ve seen firsthand that when leaders show up and listen, kids and working families thrive. I first ran to be a voice for students who were being overlooked, especially Black and brown children, and that commitment has guided me at every level of service. In Congress, I’m running to keep fighting for opportunity, dignity, and a future where everyone has a fair shot.
We have the most corrupt President of all time in the White House. House Democrats are prepared to fully use the power of oversight in the next Congress when we retake the majority. We will regain the trust of the American people by publicly exposing Trump’s stock trades, crypto greed, and his politicization of federal agencies for his own gain. It is past time that he and his cronies face consequences for their reckless actions.
I believe that residents of NC-04 are currently facing an affordability crisis. The prices of groceries, gas, housing, utilities, and childcare have gotten out of control. In Congress, I am standing up to Trump’s tariffs and taking on corporate price gouging that drives up costs. I am also pushing to end Trump’s reckless unapproved war, raise the national minimum wage, build more affordable housing, and restore funding for Medicaid and nutrition programs that were slashed by the Big Ugly Bill.
Since my days serving in the State House to now serving in Congress, I’ve always been in the minority party. That means I’ve had to find common ground, common values, and common goals with my counterparts in order to make a change. I’ve forged relationships with unlikely allies due to starting conversations and after talking, realizing we actually have more in common than we have differences.
This mindset has allowed me to have my bipartisan legislation pass the House that will protect our planet while creating good-paying American jobs. It has also allowed me to find creative ways to bring home federal dollars in the midst of no appropriations bills being fully passed through Congress and signed into law.
As a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I recognize the urgent need to create a robust sustainable energy infrastructure nationwide. In NC-04, new clean energy and environmental technologies have been critical in our region’s economic development and success. I am working with my House colleagues to build on these advancements that move our country away from our dependence on fossil fuels and build true energy independence.
We must strengthen current environmental protection and increase funding to federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and National Park Service. I am a strong supporter of the Green New Deal and a member of the Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition.
One of my top priorities in Congress is to defend healthcare. In the State Senate, I helped expand Medicaid. In Congress, I am fighting to defend it from Republican cuts. The Republican Big, Ugly Bill caused healthcare costs to skyrocket for millions of Americans. The House Democrats’ bill to extend the ACA tax credits passed the House but now the Senate needs to get this legislation to the President’s desk immediately. I do support a single-payer healthcare system, Medicare for All.
