The North Carolina House of Representatives is the lower house of the North Carolina General Assembly. The House of Representatives consists of 120 members who serve a term of two years. Each member represents an average of 87,116 residents *, as of the 2020 Census . The presiding officer of the House of Representatives is the Speaker of the House, who holds powers similar to those of the Senate President pro-tem. The Speaker is elected by the members from their membership for a two-year term. The Speaker’s duties include maintaining order in the House and appointing members to the House standing committees. The North Carolina General Assembly, of which the House is a part, is to convene a new regular session every two years, and the dates for these sessions are set by law. The NC legislature makes decisions on the budget: taxes, tax credits, economic development, education funding, Pre-K, the courts, Medicaid, etc. It also passes laws that set environmental standards such as water and air quality, tax rates, tax credits, criminal justice. Legislators in both chambers serve two-year terms without term limits. Sessions begin at noon on the third Wednesday after the second Monday in January.* https://ballotpedia.org/Population_represented_by_state_legislators

I am your proud NC House Representative for District 57 (Northern Greensboro). In August 2024, I was elected by Guilford County Democratic Party leaders and appointed by Gov. Cooper to finish my predecessor’s term and replace her on the ballot. That November, I was proudly elected by an overwhelming 68% of voters - thank you to the 31,986 voters who put their trust and faith behind me! I have worked tirelessly this biennium to represent ALL of my constituents and I hope to continue serving as your NC House Rep. for the 2026-2028 term!
My top legislative priority is affordable and accessible healthcare. Our healthcare system is based on a significantly flawed, for-profit insurance system. Medicaid is a vital program in our state and must be protected. We are in a mental health crisis. Women have an undeniable right to reproductive choice. Guilford County has an extremely high infant mortality rate (9.2% in 2023 vs 6.9% in NC and 5.6% in US) and 70% of infant deaths were Black. We must do more to support pregnant women across all trimesters and throughout the first year post-partum.
We are not doing enough to support public education families and educators/staff in our state. 84% of NC families choose public schools for their families. Unfunded mandates on our teachers and staff increase burnout and turnover rate. NC public school teachers are underpaid and new NC public school teachers are not set up for success. Private school vouchers are siphoning billions of tax-payer dollars to benefit mostly white kids. I disagree with funding requests from Tier 3 and Tier 4, which are families of four making over $267,651 a year or not even reporting their household income. These families are likely already sending their children to private school of their own volition and do not need financial support from taxpayer dollars.
Nobody likes paying taxes but we can implement a tax strategy that applies a fair tax burden across socioeconomic status. Currently lower earners face a higher percentage of burden across state and local city and property taxes whereas the top 1% and businesses receive the largest breaks. I believe the corporate tax rate should NOT go to 0% and that it should be increased to the average in the SE. We can be fiscally responsible to tax as low as possible while still ensuring adequate funds to support our growing state.
I am determined to find bipartisan support to keep guns away from those who only wish to seek harm. During my freshmen term, I led the NC Democratic caucus’ gun violence prevention strategy with 12 bills to save lives, including safe storage, lost/stolen reporting, red-flag laws, school safety funding, and banning ghost guns, assault rifles, and excessive magazines. None sadly got any bipartisan support or even had a committee hearing, but we forge onward. Six-in-ten U.S. adults say gun violence is a very big problem in the country today. I have been a vocal advocate for gun violence prevention through Moms Demand Action after the horrors of Uvalde, Sandy Hook, Vegas, Parkland (the list of mass shootings horrifically goes on).
