Being born and raised in Alamance County genuinely ties me to the school district as a long-term resident. I spent all 12 years in the district, as did my children and grandchildren, and one grandchild currently attends Cummings High School. After graduation, I became actively involved in community organizations and stayed involved in school activities with the kids from elementary school through high school. This experience helped me understand the needs of students and parents. During this time, I earned two associate degrees, a bachelor's degree, and a master's degree in education administration. Then I began working as a Substitute teacher. So now, I could speak to real, lived issues rather than abstract concepts with self-knowledge.
1. Governance and Policy oversight will set the overall direction and policies that guide schools. 2. Superintendent management will hire, evaluate, and support the district's chief executive officer. 3. Meetings and collaboration will allow for making informed decisions that support student success. 4. Budget and resource allocation will ensure the public that funds are being used responsibly and equitably. 5. Legal and ethical responsibilities, wherein the board must act within its legal framework and board policies. 6. Curriculum and academic standards, while ensuring that all students have access to quality education and equitable opportunities across programs and facilities. 7. Community Engagement and advocacy.
ABSS's current priorities focus on improving staff retention and recruitment, sustaining academic quality, managing rising operational costs, and ensuring equitable access through strategic planning and infrastructure improvements. Key operational and financial needs, compliance challenges, and infrastructure and access issues remain. ABSS can prioritize by aligning its strategic plan pillars with a transparent, data-driven allocation process that uses state and local funds to address urgent safety, instructional, and operational gaps first.
Implement a structured, multi-year "Advanced Teaching Role" program with salary supplements, leadership responsibilities, and clear career progression paired with targeted recruitment incentives to make ABSS competitive with surrounding districts. This program would include leadership and mentoring roles, with stipends and recognition for those roles. Create a structured career progression from entry-level to advanced roles, with annual reviews and clear promotion criteria. A structured career-focused program with pay supplements, leadership roles, and clear advancement supported by targeted recruitment incentives would directly address recruitment and retention challenges while aligning with the district's strategic plan for retention.
Early school readiness refers to how prepared a young child is to begin formal education, encompassing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development, as well as the skills, behaviors, and attitudes needed for success in school and beyond. Equitable access goes beyond simply making something available. It recognizes that people start from different circumstances and may need different levels or types of support to achieve similar outcomes. I support ABSS's pre-kindergarten program because it provides a high-quality, inclusive foundation for children's early-life learning, equipping them with essential skills for kindergarten and strengthening community partnerships to ensure equitable access and success for all children.
I am currently a member of the Green Level Town Council, so I understand the core skills required to serve on a board. Communication is one of the most important skills on a board; it involves listening to different perspectives, explaining complex issues clearly, and representing the community's voice. Collaborating with other board members and community partners to reach consensus is essential. Decision-making, balancing competing priorities, making evidence-based choices, and following through on commitments are essential to becoming a strong, successful, proven leader, and that's what I stand for.

I am an educator, researcher, parent, and neighbor who has lived in Alamance County for 26 years. I serve as Elon University’s Assistant Provost for Scholarship and Creative Activity and as a professor of exercise science. My work requires listening carefully, analyzing evidence, collaborating across differences, managing resources responsibly, and turning ideas into action. These are skills that are essential for effective school board governance and oversight. As the parent of two children in ABSS, I understand the district as both a professional responsibility and a personal commitment. I would bring classroom experience, thoughtful leadership, and a student-first perspective to the board.
A school board member’s central responsibility is to keep students at the center of every decision while providing responsible, transparent governance. Board members should set policy and priorities, oversee the superintendent, steward public funds, monitor academic and operational outcomes, and advocate for the resources schools need. They must listen to students, families, educators, and the broader community; ask difficult questions respectfully; and work collaboratively rather than pursue personal agendas. The board should ensure schools are safe, supportive, and welcoming environments where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
I believe ABSS's most pressing needs are improving student achievement, recruiting and retaining excellent educators, and ensuring students have the support they need to succeed. I would prioritize foundational literacy and mathematics, timely intervention, mental-health and counseling supports, career and technical education, advanced coursework, and enrichment. Funding decisions should begin with student needs and evidence of impact, while protecting classroom resources and supporting educators. I would advocate for adequate state funding, seek local investments, review spending transparently, and pursue partnerships and grants when appropriate. Long-term planning is essential so limited resources make the greatest difference.
In a competitive market for educators, ABSS must be a district where teachers feel respected, supported, and able to succeed. Competitive salaries and benefits matter, but retention also depends on manageable workloads, adequate classroom resources, strong school leadership, mentoring for early-career teachers, and meaningful professional growth. As a board member, I would seek teacher input and consider how policies affect their daily work. Recruitment should highlight ABSS’s commitment to students, supportive school communities, and opportunities for growth. Teachers should feel heard, valued, and encouraged to build long-term careers in our district.
I strongly support high-quality Pre-K because it helps children enter kindergarten ready to learn and can provide lasting academic and developmental benefits. Early learning supports language, social, emotional, and foundational academic skills while helping schools identify needs and connect families with resources. Access should be equitable, and programs should be developmentally appropriate, welcoming, and connected to the broader early-childhood system. I would support strengthening and expanding Pre-K as resources allow, while carefully evaluating enrollment, staffing, facilities, and outcomes to ensure sustainable growth that benefits the students and families who need it most.
As both an educator and the parent of two children in ABSS, I care deeply about the success of every student in our schools. I am running because I believe strong public schools are essential to the future of our children and our community. ABSS students deserve excellent teaching, safe and supportive schools, meaningful opportunities, and adults who listen to them. Educators deserve respect, resources, and a voice in the decisions that affect their work. As a nonpartisan candidate, I will approach board service with humility, careful attention to evidence, transparent communication, and a willingness to work with people who may begin from different perspectives. My commitment is simple: put students first, support educators, and help ABSS build a stronger future together.

Education has shaped nearly every chapter of my life. As an educator, English-language learner, and mother, I know firsthand how education can open doors and strengthen communities. I have taught in schools, colleges, and universities in several countries, earned my doctorate in Educational Leadership from High Point University, and dedicated my life to helping others learn and thrive. In Alamance, I have served through youth outreach with Alamance Public Schools, literacy work with Reading Connections, and years of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. I speak, read, and write four languages, and after 16 years of calling Burlington home, I want to give back to the community that has given my family so much.
A school board member’s most important responsibility is to keep students at the center of every decision. That means listening to families, educators, and the community; setting a clear vision for student success; supporting strong teaching and learning; and ensuring that public resources are used responsibly and equitably. A board member should ask thoughtful questions, work collaboratively, uphold transparency and accountability, and help create safe, welcoming schools where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Above all, the role is to serve the community and advocate for the long-term success of its children.
Our biggest priorities should be properly funding our public schools, retaining good teachers and staff, and helping students succeed. We face teacher retention challenges, and we need to ensure our educators have competitive pay.

We need to invest in strengthening our public schools, supporting student literacy and academic achievement. Strong public schools also help create more equitable opportunities for every child, regardless of their background or circumstances.

I would work with the board, superintendent, county commissioners, and community to use available funding responsibly, pursue additional resources, and make decisions that put students, educators, and the future of our public schools first.
I believe recruiting and retaining qualified teachers starts with competitive salaries, job security, and a supportive work environment. Teachers and school staff need the resources, respect, and support to do their jobs well. I would work with the board and superintendent to review compensation, understand why teachers are leaving, and listen to educators about the challenges they face. We also need to invest in our public schools and make teaching a profession where people feel valued and want to stay. Strong schools begin with supported teachers, and retaining good educators is essential to student success.
I strongly believe Pre-K matters because early childhood is a critical time for brain development and learning. I earned my degree in Early Childhood Education in Canada because I believe in giving children a strong foundation from the very beginning. Quality Pre-K helps develop language, literacy, social, and emotional skills and prepares children for success in school. I support access to quality Pre-K programs so every child, regardless of family income or background, has the opportunity to start school ready to learn.

I bring the perspective of a parent, educator, manager, and incumbent school board member. I hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and an MBA from NC State. Since 2003 I have worked at Duke University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering managing undergraduate teaching laboratories and conducting federally funded research. My three children have attended ABSS schools, and my family has volunteered in our schools for more than 16 years. On the Board, I helped guide ABSS through financial, facilities, and leadership challenges while emphasizing academic improvement, fiscal accountability, transparency, and practical, data-driven decisions.
The most important responsibilities of a school board member are to hire and evaluate the superintendent, set district policy, and adopt a responsible budget. The superintendent manages the district’s day-to-day operations, while the Board sets clear expectations and evaluates results. Board policy should provide consistent direction for student learning, safety, personnel, and operations. The budget must align state, local, and federal resources with those priorities while meeting essential obligations and directing resources to classrooms, student supports, and safe, well-maintained schools. In all three roles, Board members must act transparently, use high-quality data, and listen to the community.
ABSS’s critical needs are retaining excellent teachers and staff, improving student achievement, and planning responsibly for growth, maintenance, and school capacity. I would first meet required obligations: employee compensation, transportation, safety, utilities, and state and federal requirements. With remaining funds, I would prioritize competitive local salary supplements; certified positions that directly support classrooms, including instructional coaches and student-service professionals; rigorous curricula and academic supports; and urgent facility repairs and preventive maintenance. Investments should be guided by documented needs, data, measurable results, and public input, not by habit or politics.
ABSS must be competitive with surrounding districts and a place where professionals can build a career. I would advocate for stronger local salary supplements and protect compensation for teachers and classified staff. Retention also requires manageable workloads, reliable classroom resources, effective instructional support, safe and well-maintained facilities, and clear, consistent expectations. I support restoring certified support positions, including instructional coaches and related student-services staff, so teachers can focus on teaching. Most important, the Board must listen to educators before making major decisions and provide the stability, respect, and practical support that allow them to do their best work.
High-quality Pre-K is an important investment in student success. Children who enter kindergarten ready to learn are better positioned to benefit from strong early literacy, math, social-emotional, and behavioral instruction. I support expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based Pre-K programs, especially for children with the greatest needs, while maintaining high standards for instruction, staffing, family engagement, and accountability. Because state, federal, local, and community partners all play important roles in early childhood education, ABSS should work collaboratively to identify gaps in access and coordinate services. Pre-K should be part of a coherent early-learning strategy that gives every child a strong start.
I am seeking re-election because ABSS has made important progress, but the work is not finished. During my first term, the district moved from a financial crisis to a balanced position with reserves and a clean audit; strengthened financial transparency; addressed facility and safety needs; and improved academic outcomes, with fewer low-performing schools. My focus now is sustaining that progress: competitive pay and support for educators, strong instructional systems, safe and well-maintained schools, responsible planning for growth, and meaningful public engagement. I will continue to approach difficult decisions with evidence, transparency, respect for taxpayers, and a commitment to every student’s opportunity to succeed. I would be honored to continue serving Alamance County.
Position/philosophy statement My philosophy is simple: put students and classrooms first, support teachers, spend taxpayer dollars responsibly, demand accountability and transparency, and ensure every ABSS student receives equitable opportunities to succeed.

I bring 30 years of experience serving students, families, teachers, coaches, and administrators in public education. As a retired teacher, coach, Assistant Athletic Director, and Athletic Director, I understand our schools from the classroom to the central office. I have managed budgets, facilities, scheduling, personnel, student activities, and complex day-to-day challenges while working to ensure students receive equitable opportunities. As an Alamance County native, public school graduate, parent of six ABSS students, and longtime educator, I understand the importance of listening to families, supporting teachers, being accountable with taxpayer dollars, and keeping students and classrooms at the center of every decision.
The most important responsibility of a school board member is to put students first and make decisions that give every child the opportunity to succeed. That means providing strong oversight of the district, being accountable and transparent with taxpayers, and making sure resources are used responsibly. Board members must listen to teachers, staff, parents, students, and the community, while also supporting the superintendent and holding district leadership accountable. Most importantly, a board member should bring experience, common sense, and an open mind to the table while keeping the focus where it belongs, in our classrooms and on our students.
ABSS needs to prioritize the needs that most directly impact students and classrooms. That starts with recruiting and retaining quality teachers and administrators through competitive supplements, strong support, and leadership development. We must also address school safety, aging facilities, classroom resources, and additional counselors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers. I would prioritize funding based on student need and measurable impact, with greater resources directed to schools facing higher poverty and greater challenges. We must be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, improve transparency and accountability, and eliminate waste before asking for additional funding.
Recruiting and retaining great teachers starts with making sure they feel valued, supported, and respected. I would work to increase teacher supplements so ABSS can compete with surrounding districts, while also looking at meaningful ways to recognize and reward experience, advanced degrees, certifications, and additional responsibilities. We must improve working conditions by reducing unnecessary paperwork, providing relevant professional development, and giving teachers the support they need in their classrooms. I would also focus on developing leaders from within ABSS and creating clear pathways for teachers to grow. When we invest in our teachers, we invest directly in our students.
For ABSS, I believe high-quality Pre-K is an important investment in our students and our community. Early learning helps children build the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to enter kindergarten ready to learn. I would support expanding access to quality Pre-K, especially for students and families who face greater barriers to early education. We should work with existing providers and community partners to increase capacity, while ensuring programs have qualified teachers, appropriate resources, and strong accountability. Investing early can help close opportunity gaps before they become achievement gaps and give every child a stronger start.
I am running for the ABSS Board of Education because I believe experience matters, but so does the willingness to listen, learn, and work together. After 30 years as an educator, coach, athletic director, and school employee. As a parent of six children who all attended ABSS schools, I understand our schools from many different perspectives.

I want to bring a practical, student-centered voice to the Board. My priorities are putting students and classrooms first, recruiting and retaining exceptional teachers and administrators, increasing accountability and transparency, using taxpayer dollars responsibly, and ensuring schools receive the resources they need based on student needs.

I am proud of where I come from, proud of the educators and students I have served, and committed to making ABSS stronger for the next generation.
