The Moore County Board of Education is the local governing body of the County Public School System. All Board members are elected at-large within the school district in nonpartisan, countywide elections and serve staggered 4-year terms. District-specific members must reside in the district they represent.The 7-member school board has 5 primary responsibilities:1. Employ the superintendent2. Establish policy3. I served as Chief of Police for the Moore County Schools for 24 years. I developed the safety plans for all schools and made sure that the students and staff felt safe while on our campuses. I was also responsible for creating the budget for the department and making sure we were good stewards of the funds we were allotted.
For many years I coached at our high schools and middle schools. I developed and put in place the 2nd Chance Program that worked with first time offenders in an effort to help with decision making skills and to keep them out of the judicial system.
I've taught D.A.R.E. which is a program designed to make students aware of the harmful effects of using drugs and dealing with peer pressure.
I believe our number one goal is to work with the Superintendent in setting a high standard in which we expect our students to achieve. Then we must make sure that our teachers and staff have everything they need to help our students reach those goals.
We should work diligently to make our school system the best in the state academically and in regard to students' safety. I believe that a safe learning environment is essential in reaching these goals.
Our buildings and grounds are a major concern. I would work with our local and state level leaders to ensure that we have funds to maintain and repair these issues.
It's also important to study the numbers and the expectant growth in Moore County to prepare for the needs of the future. We may have to add new buildings to the campuses we already have or build new schools. The goal is to plan ahead so we are ready when that time comes.
I would work with the Superintendent to recruit local students who are interested in becoming teachers. I have witnessed many times over the years that teachers who are from Moore County have a vested interest in the community. They are the ones who plan on staying and raising their families here. I believe we could put in place an incentive package that would encourage our local students to return home after college and teach in the school system they grew up in.
I would work to make Moore County Schools a place that's inviting to all teachers. I believe in setting high standards for our employees and I believe in compensating them for a job well done.
I am a strong advocate for Pre-K programs. With the expectations we establish for our students it's important we give them every advantage we can.
I spent 90% of my adult life working in the Moore County Schools. I understand the issues we face better than most people. While serving as the Police Chief for the school system I was a problem solver. I understand the roles of all our employees and the issues they face. If am elected to the school board, I will work to make sure all employees are appreciated and valued. I know the importance of our bus drivers, cafeteria staff, maintenance workers, counselors, teachers and administrators. If you were to take away any one of those groups, the school system would shut down. I promise to be a voice for all Moore County Schools employees and to be an advocate for every child in our school system. I believe school board members should be able to sit down, and at times agree to disagree; but always do that which is best for our children.
