HOKE COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT SUPERVISOR
{_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}
The non-paid board of supervisors meets monthly to establish local soil and water conservation priorities based on the needs of the district. The Board chairs work groups to address these priorities through the installation and implementation of best management practices that protect and improve the natural resources within the district. The work is accomplished by partnering with local, state and federal agencies; businesses; and non-profit organizations for technical and financial assistance. The Division of Soil and Water Conservation administers ACSP, AgWRAP and CCAP, and holds each local board of supervisors accountable to these state programs.Each district is governed by a five-member board of supervisors. Three supervisors are elected on the general ballot as non-partisan candidates during the regular election of county officers, and two are appointed by the NC Soil and Water Conservation Commission upon recommendation of the local district board of supervisors.

I presently serve as a Hoke County Soil and Water Conservation Board Supervisor. I was honored to be asked to serve in this position in 2024 when the previous Board member died unexpectantly. I have completed the required courses, attended the required meetings and obtained the educational hours needed to serve in this position.
Hoke County is rapidly growing. As a farmer I see many farmers leaving farming. Many can no longer afford to farm due to the increased cost associated with farming such as land management, equipment and irrigation. Land that used to be family farms and forest is quickly becoming new housing developments and subdivisions.
Many of the new homes depend on wells and sceptic tanks. Water shortages and water pressure issues in several parts of the county is becoming a major concern.
I see the most pressing need in the county is education and the understanding of how to preserve our soil, water and other resources I must help provide our citizens with technical assistance and knowledge of resources to save and protect our soil and water.
I am very proud of our cost share programs. Through Hoke County Soil and Water, Natural Resources Conservation Service Cost Share and AgWrap funding was provided to citizens in the county for projects such as Cover Crops, No Till Drilling, Wells, Trough and Tanks for Livestock Watering and Residue and Tillage Management.
To introduce conservation and prepare our future generation, we encourage and sponsor High School Juniors and Seniors participation in Envirothon. This program enables students to represent Hoke County and attend an annual workshop at NC State in Raleigh. Along with Envirothon, Soil and Water also offers a poster contest for all Hoke Elementary students and an essay contest for all Hoke Middle school students.
