I served in the United States Navy, and that service gave me the discipline, teamwork, and sense of duty that have shaped everything since. It gave me the confidence to be independent and build my own path as an entrepreneur in information technology, a career I've now pursued for 32 years.
Service has always extended beyond my work. I founded Indivisible Charlotte, organized food drives, spoken before the Board of Elections fighting for voting rights and healthcare legislation. When I ran for Congress, my campaign made sure that effort gave back directly, providing 225,000 meals to constituents in need.
It's time for leaders who put people over power.
My top priority is lowering the cost of living for working families in Rowan County, starting with out-of-control electric bills. Duke Energy keeps pushing rates higher while families struggle to keep up, and I will fight to hold utilities accountable to ratepayers, not shareholders.
Health care costs are crushing families too, and insurance companies are denying coverage people have paid for. I know this firsthand. I'm fighting advanced prostate cancer, and I'm fighting my own insurance claim denials at the same time. I will push for real protections against unfair denials, because no one should have to battle their insurer while battling for their life.
I'm a product of a well-funded public education from when Governor Jim Hunt led North Carolina, and I know what it can do for our children's future. That's why I oppose any cuts to our public schools, including voucher plans that drain public dollars from our classrooms and into the pockets of the wealthiest families.
My priorities are clear. I will fight for more funding for public education, stop the voucher scam, raise teacher pay to recruit and keep great educators, and reduce class sizes so every student gets the attention they deserve.
Every child in North Carolina deserves a strong public school, no matter their zip code. Our tax dollars should invest in all of our kids, not subsidize private tuition for the few.
After 16 years of Republican control in Raleigh, corporations have received sweetheart tax breaks, with the corporate income tax on a path to elimination, while working families struggle to keep up with rising prices. That system is unfair, and it isn't working for the people of North Carolina.
Tax policy should support the residents who power our economy. I believe corporations and the extremely wealthy must pay their fair share, so we can invest in public schools, health care, and infrastructure while easing the burden on working and middle-class families.
I will fight for a fair tax system that ensures a strong future for North Carolina and everyone who calls it home.
Safe communities start with prevention. I will promote laws that invest in mental health and addiction treatment, so trained professionals can respond to crises and police can focus on serious crime. I support fully funding local law enforcement, community policing, and programs that give young people opportunities and keep them out of trouble.
I also support commonsense gun safety, including restoring the background check requirement for handgun purchases that the legislature repealed in 2023, and safe storage laws to keep guns out of the hands of children.
Every family in North Carolina deserves to feel safe in their home, their school, and their neighborhood.
