I am a retired public school teacher, coach, administrator, and lifelong advocate for safe, thriving schools. I have dedicated over 50 years to education, serving as a teacher, coach of seven sports, administrator, violence-prevention specialist, teacher-support specialist, and adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte.
After witnessing too many young people affected by violence, I co-founded Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.) in 1989. Today, the S.A.V.E. program has over 5,000 clubs in 49 states and several international chapters, and is recognized as Point of Light #875 by President George H.W. Bush. I also received the Presidential Service Award from President Bill Clinton in 1995.
Education should be exceptional, not exclusive. Our children deserve safe, well-funded classrooms. My experience as a public school teacher and founder of the SAVE program leads my approach, and it's simple -- all children deserve a quality education.
Fair and equitable distribution of public funding between public and private school Opportunity Scholarships. Currently, public schools are only getting half of the essential funding needed in order to have fully funded public schools.
Tax policy should support North Carolina's economy. I disagree with the property tax amendments and ending the corporate tax rate. I believe corporate taxes should increase as corporations are benefitting by being located in our state.
The property tax amendments will decrease public safety as some communities will not be able to afford recycling, trash, and emergency services including police and fire services.
There needs to be more accountability and transparency in the state legislature. The state legislature should not take away fiscal governance of local municipalities and counties by capping property taxes. Veto power should be returned to the Governor. The state board of elections should also be returned to the Governor.
