ONSLOW COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT SUPERVISOR {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

The non-paid board of supervisors meets monthly to establish local soil and water conservation priorities based on the needs of the district. The Board chairs work groups to address these priorities through the installation and implementation of best management practices that protect and improve the natural resources within the district. The work is accomplished by partnering with local, state and federal agencies; businesses; and non-profit organizations for technical and financial assistance. The Division of Soil and Water Conservation administers ACSP, AgWRAP and CCAP, and holds each local board of supervisors accountable to these state programs.Each district is governed by a five-member board of supervisors. Three supervisors are elected on the general ballot as non-partisan candidates during the regular election of county officers, and two are appointed by the NC Soil and Water Conservation Commission upon recommendation of the local district board of supervisors.

I'm an eastern NC native and a long time resident of Onslow County, spending my entire life around the farms and waterways that make this area so special. I graduated from NC State University with two agriculture degrees and continued on to serve the residents of Onslow County as a Livestock Extension Agent with NC Cooperative Extension. My background and work experience have given me special insight into the role of Soil & Water in our state as well as a working knowledge of all of the state agencies and organizations that collaborate to achieve the goal of promoting conservation within North Carolina. I have nearly a decade of experience serving our District in this role and value the partnerships I've built along the way.
Our county is facing rapid development. Open land is being replaced by housing and commercial development. We work to support our farming community through technical guidance and cost share programming to help support conservation goals. We also connect them with resources to protect their land such as Voluntary Ag Districts and conservation easements. We also work to support urban initiatives that can address runoff and water quality. In an effort to relieve residential flooding in the county, like that seen during Hurricane Florence, our district secured state cost share funds for stream debris cleanout across the county. The district also works closely with the county to help landowners address beaver dams.
The Soil & Water office does a fantastic job of providing technical support to landowners and also helping those individuals who qualify secure cost share funding to achieve their conservation goals. The conservation concerns that we face in Onslow are not unique and the Onslow District staff and Supervisors work to collaborate with other Districts and State staff to identify solutions.
I have a personal interest in farmland preservation. NC ranks #1 in the nation for acres of farmland lost each year. This is so alarming. Once agricultural land is lost, it's lost from agricultural production forever. The number of landowners across the state who are interested in enrolling their land in conservation programs far outweighs the pools of funding available to accomplish this. By working through Soil & Water and other partnering agencies and organizations, I would love to continue to explore all of the options available to help our landowners protect their open lands for generations to come.
