A school board member's core job is governance, not management. You set the direction and hold the district accountable.
Cape May County faces a real tension, we're one of the most expensive places in New Jersey to own property, and our school-age population keeps shrinking while a lot of that tax base belongs to residents without kids in the schools. I don't think affordability and excellence have to be opposites, but only if we're honest about efficiency first. That means shared services and regionalized programs between our smaller districts before we ever talk about cutting classroom quality. It also means selling the case that good schools aren't just a benefit for parents, they support property values and bring young families back to the county, which grows the tax base for everyone. The answer isn't choosing between affordability and education, it's spending smarter so we don't have to.
I want to answer this directly, but “LGBTQ+ policies” covers a lot of ground in curriculum, anti-bullying protocols, counseling, facilities, sports, parental notification and I'd rather address the specific policy you have in mind than a vague category.
I don't support policies that allow biological males into girls bathrooms and locker rooms. I think student privacy and safety in those spaces should be based on biological sex, and I'll say that plainly rather than dance around it.
Beyond that, my broader approach is that every student deserves to feel safe from bullying and harassment at school. That's non-negotiable. But I also believe parents have a right to know what's being taught and discussed with their kids, and I don't support schools keeping information from parents about their own children.
I trust the people we've hired to do their jobs. Our librarians and administrators care about kids and don't need a bureaucracy looking over their shoulder on every book. Parents should always be able to raise a concern about a specific title, with a clear, fair process to handle it, but that's a check for real issues, not a default assumption that our staff are getting it wrong. I believe in the people running our schools.
