US Congress Arkansas District 1
To uphold the US Constitution and represent the population of Arkansas Congressional District 1.
I am an economist and I have helped clients around the globe make real-world business decisions in the face of government constraints. I taught public policy concepts to managers in businesses and to college students. I have experience with government regulation and the law and I have published in 8 different law journals. I grew up in a small family business, working in corporate America and ran my own business.
I would reduce federal regulations that constrain business and personal life and that create economic inefficiencies. The most obvious is the 1920 "Jones" Merchant Marine Act of 1920 has devastated US shipping such that our share of commercial ship building capacity has fallen from 1/3 of the worlds capacity to 0.02%. Our ships cost 5 times as much as ships from our allies such as S. Korea or Japan. This means China's strangle-hold on this industry expands.
The Jones Act means that Arkansas rice growers (for example) can't compete on the eastern seaboard of the US with Brazilian rice that travels on ships costing 1/5 of what Arkansans have to use.
I would work with those in the house and the senate who already wish to revise or repeal.
