The Charleston County School Board is nonpartisan and made up of nine local citizens each representing a district within the county. Each member is elected for a four-year term. School board members determine the vision and goals for the district. They adopt policies that give the district direction to set priorities and meet its goals. I'm a father of three CCSD students, a civil engineer, and I'm passionate about the community I live in. I'm running for school board to represent parents and students, to provide a safe and educational experience for all, and to make sure CCSD supports teachers and staff. I want to continue the momentum that has been built in recent years and contribute to making Charleston County Schools stronger.
I currently manage multiple complex projects and various engineering teams, giving me experience with budget management and personnel issues. I bring a data-driven and logical approach to solving problems and managing projects. I know what it takes to get hard work done and deliver projects in the public realm.
I am involved in my local community, serving on various committees at my church, holding leadership roles in professional organizations, and participating in community and school events.
I think one of the most pressing challenges facing the Charleston County School District is the variability of academic success based on a particular school. I think the Peninsula Promise is a great way to try to target specific schools and bring new approaches to help elevate neighborhood schools. After giving the Peninsula Promise time to develop and take hold, this model could be expanded to improve other schools throughout the district to improve outcomes for all CCSD students. I do not want the quality of a child's education to be dependent on the ZIP code that they came from.
As a parent, I always want to make sure my children have a healthy balance of technology use in the classroom. I acknowledge that technology is a necessary component of our society, but I want to make sure that the school board is constantly reviewing the use of technology and the impact of it on children developmentally. We need to continue to coordinate with teachers and parents about the appropriateness of the screentime guidelines that CCSD is developing. This needs to be an ongoing conversation. I would also apply these thoughts to the use of AI. I am encouraged by the AI Framework recently adopted by the board but that needs to be continually monitored and updated.
I think the weighted student funding model is a great way that Charleston County School District has taken a new approach to help students achieve success. This model allows for a more equitable distribution of funds based on student needs. Since it is still relatively new in this school district, it still needs time to reach the full potential I think this model has. I appreciate how the school district has allowed flexibility for each school to provide their own approach with the funds, which allow the schools to have input on how the funds are used. The school district should continue to track the academic success with this funding model over the next few years. I would love to see a way for schools and leadership to compare and share the ways they used their WSF to determine if there are measurable improvements that other schools could also implement.
I think it is important for all students to feel safe and supported in their school, ultimately leading to a better learning environment. I would start by making sure that all faculty and staff feel confident and knowledgeable about guidelines. Additionally, faculty and staff must feel comfortable communicating any concerns they may have with CCSD leadership. I would also like to ensure that students and parents feel comfortable bringing any concerns to their teachers or school administrators, which would need to be documented with action items for follow-up. I believe that supporting students and creating safe environments will ultimately lead to better results for the school system and Charleston County.
Working together through differing viewpoints is something that I frequently encounter as an engineer. My projects often have various sides that must be considered and evaluated, and that always includes stakeholder engagement to hear various perspectives. I have a history of working with people and listening to all of the concerns that are raised and working towards a solution that achieve the goals of the project, while minimizing direct impacts.
