From invasive spruce budworms to destructive coastal storms to diminished federal support, Maine is facing many challenges. We need to protect the environment in order to protect the people who live here. We in state government need to focus on ways to build resilience against climate changes and keep people healthy and safe at home and at work. This means investing in clean energy, affordable housing, funding public education and healthcare in order to promote healthy individuals and jobs and the future of Maine.
District 110 faces many similar critical problems as other districts: the cost and availability of housing, health care, rising energy and child care costs and burdensome taxes. In the 132nd legislative session, I worked to deliver property tax stabilization and relief programs, and supported funding 55% public K-12 and 5% of municipal revenue sharing which helped stabilize local property taxes. I will continue to strengthen education and affordable childcare programs, like the Universal School Meals program. More creative ways to address increasing energy costs need to be considered in the next legislative session like the plug-in solar bill I supported which give more individuals access to affordable clean energy.
I am currently serving my first term in the 132nd Legislature, representing District 110 which is Cumberland, Chebeague Island and Long Island. I have lived in Cumberland for 35 years and have taught in Maine's public schools for over 30 years; this includes teaching at Wiscasset and Portland High School, SMCC and USM as well as having taught in the Republic of China and Japan. I served on the MSAD51 School Board and am a member of the Cumberland Historical Society, the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust, the Cumberland 200th Anniversary Committee and several (never too many) Prince Memorial Library reading groups.
