The primary concern I hear is affordability across the board. Pressures from war fueled inflation and inconsistent Federal trade policy policy have made a huge impact on our wallets. We are heading into a winter facing record high heating oil prices and a top priority must be ensuring people are able to heat their homes and remain safe during the coldest months.
We are also facing a healthcare crisis. Insurance rates are expected to spike by another 15% and rural care centers continue to close. It is critical we make it possible for people to continue to have access to quality preventative healthcare, reopen birthing centers across Maine, and mitigate federal damages to our healthcare systems.
Windham is facing growing pains. We are reaching critical mass along our 302 corridor and need to see investment in our infrastructure to coincide with the housing growth we have seen in recent years.
One of the challenges of managing growth in a primarily rural state is that we want to centralize our growth districts so as to mitigate damage to our natural landscapes. However by taking this approach we need to make sure there is appropriate development strategies so our population centers don't get overwhelmed too fast.
I want the people of Windham to know that I am going to fight for the future of our town and state. Being a parent to young children it is my number one priority to ensure legislation we put in place today has positive impacts on future generations. At the same time I am fully aware we need some immediate relief for our residents who can are being financially squeezed.
We need to look at across the board tax reforms to reduce the burden on low income individuals and seniors on a fixed income, we need to make it possible for towns to raise revenues from non primary residences, and we need to make our state more welcoming to new families by creating more affordable childcare options.
