The skyrocketing costs of housing, health care, groceries, gas, energy, and other every day needs. The federal government is making decisions that benefit those who already have the most while leaving most Mainers behind. Too much wealth and power is consolidated in the hands of too few individuals and corporations. The federal government has failed to meet its commitment to fund special education, leaving Maine students behind. Rural hospitals are closing and Mainers cannot access health care. The federal government is killing and kidnapping our friends and neighbors. The Trump administration is trying to erase the existence of trans people. Maine gives big tax breaks to big corporations and calls it economic development.
We need more affordable housing so older residents can age in place and young people can stay here. As a coastal community, we are acutely impacted by climate change. Rising property taxes are increasingly unsustainable for residents. We need more state funding for education, especially special education. Our residents need greater access to services and supports including mental and behavioral health care, child care, and direct care. We must protect the livelihood of our small businesses and main street by reining in corporate greed and price fixing. We must continue to protect the human rights of all Maine people to live fully in our society as their true selves.
I started my career as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Ukraine. Living in another country so vastly different the US made me want to understand what drives these differences, e.g. in access to services, investment in infrastructure like schools and roads, clean air and water--and the answer is government. Over two decades I have worked in government evaluating the effectiveness of state and federal programs, served on my local school board, and advocated at the State House for vaccines, gun safety, and fair taxation. I have seen close up how our state, local, and federal governments interact and how government can better serve the needs of Maine people. I hope to bring real solutions to real problems for people in my community.
