In no particular order, the greatest challenges facing northern Maine are in the areas of rural healthcare, economic development, workforce housing, and rising property taxes. We are also challenged by a political environment that sees virtue in not governing and addressing the region's pressing social, economic, and healthcare challenges. One-party dominance in our region has not served northern Maine well.
We need legislators who will address the region's challenges by listening to our constituents and by addressing their most pressing needs.
Our healthcare system in northern Maine is challenged by changes in Medicare and Medicaid. I would make work to insure that our healthcare system not only survives, but thrives.
School funding is driving up property taxes. The school funding formula needs to be revisited state wide so that local property values do not determine the quality of education available to our next generation.
It is difficult for businesses in northern Maine to find workers. Many workers are international and they do a phenomenal job filling in. Workforce development should be a priority.
I would also work to strengthen our tourist economy while protecting our outstanding natural resources.
I grew up in poverty and early on learned the value of hard work as the way forward. As the first person on either side of my family to graduate from college, I know deeply the value of education. I chose to live in Maine in 2015 after a career in Indiana as a professor of history and academic administrator. I will transfer my work ethic, research, writing, and speaking skills to my work in Augusta.
We are the parents of six children and 10 grandchildren. Their experiences now as adults and young grandchildren have informed my family-centric approach to life in general and to legislation in particular.
I am deeply concerned about our country's slide toward autocratic rule and the erosion of our freedoms to live, love, and speak freely.
