Housing, Affordability, Healthcare, and the long-term sustainability of the Maine economy are the primary challenges in the state, similar to those in many other states. Housing is the basis for having a viable workforce, stability in household relationships, mental health, and others. The cost of living in all areas - food, fuel, energy, healthcare - exacerbates challenges with paying property taxes or rent. A single surgery or major medical event can wipe out a year's worth of earnings for the un- or underinsured while medical facilities continue to consolidate or close. All of these challenges funnel into other problems that we also care about, like the performance and quality of education our schools are able to delivery.
The towns of House District 12 aren't so different from other rural, coastal communities in Maine. Our exposure to the coast presents challenges with erosion and sustainability as weather events, once considered to be once-in-a-century anomalies, are happening with greater regularity. Much of the local economy centers around seafood and the lobster fishery in particular. I want to work with fellow legislators to strike a good balance to preserve and support the industry in the short term with doing what we as a state can to preserve the fishery stock for the future. In matters of education, I want to find common sense solutions to problems in districts like ours which, for example, span a large number of towns and multiple counties.
There's never a time to leave democracy, let alone our democratic processes, to chance. We need candidates of integrity who will support our systems and people, not try to tear them down. For 12 years, I worked with other board members to ensure our local schools had the resources and governance needed to excel. We didn't always succeed, but as with all things, there are many factors, only some of which we can control. I don't make promises I can't keep. That's why the only promise I make as a candidate is to work with everyone involved, regardless of party affiliation, and try my best to find solutions that do the most good for everyone involved while inflicting the least harm or difficulty.
