Mainers face many challenges with economic security. Two of my top priorities are making health insurance affordable for working Mainers and providing property tax relief so Mainers aren’t at risk of losing their homes. I have worked on several proposals involving property tax fairness credits, which are beneficial because they specifically focus on financial need. A third priority is protecting Mainers’ constitutional rights in the face of federal actions including unlawful detention and use of force that impact so many in our community. As State Senator I have worked successfully to pass 3 new laws that limit ICE activities and ensure Mainers receive due process.
While every household in our state is harmed by the increased cost of gas and home heating fuel caused by the war against Iran, Senate District 29 faces unique burdens due to dependence on fossil fuel. The presence of oil terminal facilities exposes the community to harmful emissions that impact the health and safety of residents. I've worked for 7 years to protect the community by passing laws that require testing, reduce emissions and make companies responsible for clean up of sites that fall out of use. As a coastal community, we also sustain significant damage due to climate change and sea level rise. I've successfully advocated for funding to repair critical infrastructure, while repair of the shore near SMCC remains a high priority.
In my role as Senate Chair of the Judiciary Committee, I have a responsibility to constituents and Mainers across our state to protect civil rights. My work focuses on constitutional rights, reproductive rights, Wabanaki sovereignty, firearm safety, improving our legal system and ensuring that Mainers who are deprived of their rights have a legal pathway to a remedy. The meetings I chair involve many of the most divisive, polarizing issues. My leadership is appreciated by colleagues and members of the public who testify at Judiciary hearings. I ensure that everyone is comfortable expressing their position on legislation and is treated with respect, and that the hostility found in national politics does not compromise our work together.
