Health Care is a critical concern with facilities closing or being acquired by out-of-state interests. In the news recently, the nurses at CMMC who were fired at the same time they were beginning the process of unionizing. Losing nursing staff means patient care is endangered. It also means that nurses left on staff have more to do and may suffer physically and emotionally. At a point when we need more nurses, we face a continued shortage. Affordability is a huge concern for us all. When people are unable to cover their basic needs, we are in a crisis situation. Housing, food, gas, heating oil, health insurance are all increasing with no end in sight.
Infrastructure is a critical problem for many communities. Dealing with aging roads and bridges, when they were built was not part of a specific plan to address future needs. Addressing community housing needs is a continual problem, as current residents may argue with new housing encroaching on their lands. In addition, costs of building new houses continues to increase, making the houses less affordable when they are built. Dealing with existing funding problems is a real challenge for many as decisions can be made without considering that the impact may end up greater than the original problem. Funding for schools is also challenging. Children are our future and we need to support their education, no matter what road they choose in life.
I've lived in Lisbon for 48 years. I'm retired from LL Bean, after 20+ years and also retired from my position as Lisbon Children's Librarian. I've been fortunate to have two interesting and challenging careers! I've served on the Lisbon Town Council for 3 years, currently serve on the Lisbon Development Committee, the Lisbon EMS Board, the Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties Extension Service, and the Friends of the Lisbon Library. I feel strongly that government is too focused on what divides Mainers, not what unites us. We need to strive to find more common ground to formulate more productive action plans. Listening to others' viewpoints can make a huge difference in moving ahead.
