Experience & Qualifications 36 years as a School Librarian in the Ann Arbor Public Schools
I am a School Librarian which means that I am skilled at research and I also have a deep belief that facts matter. In addition as a retiree, I have the time to devote to understanding the issues and sharing that information with the community so that we can make good decisions together. I also believe strongly that listening and really hearing the concerns of others builds common ground which helps us find the way forward.
I have now lived here full-time in the county for three years and for the previous fifty years I have spent summers here. I believe it is my time to give back to the county. I listen every morning to IPR and they continually talk about the townships and how hard it is to find people who are willing to step up to do the work of local politics. I am willing to take a turn and hope I can make a difference.
I think our most important issue is affordable housing. I bought my house in 2013 before I retired from my work as a school librarian in Ann Arbor. If I had waited until I retired I would have not have been able to find housing here that I could afford. While I believe we need to regulate STRs and I am definitely for that, I also believe that the focus on STRs alone will not solve the problem. I think that we need to accept that building density is what will make it possible for us to house our families, our teachers, our first responders, and our service workers. In addition I have watched as we lost our grocery story and more recently our pharmacy. If we are going to have a community, we need these resources to be available locally.
I think that people should be able to reach out to office holders and share concerns. As someone who served on the board of my condo downstate, I think that communication and working together is very important. Obviously there are monthly Township Board meetings but I wonder if there are other ways to get information for decision making. When people do not feel as if their concerns matter to the people "in charge" then that is part of the breakdown in moving forward together to solve problems.

Occupation / Current Position Farmer
Education Glen Lake graduate, Certificate in Beef Management from Michigan State University
Experience & Qualifications 2 years as Leelanau County Commissioner, 6 years as Empire Township Trustee
I was elected as Leelanau County Commissioner representing District 6 which includes Empire, Glen Arbor and Cleveland townships 10 years ago. Following my time on the county board I was appointed as Empire Township Trustee to finish out a term for the previous trustee who moved out of the township. I have since been reelected twice. I spent a brief period of time serving as Empire Township Clerk as well, before moving back to a trustee position. Through all of this experience I have learned a great deal about navigating local government and how to continually serve my community in a positive way.
I have always had a strong desire to be involved in my community. I have always thought serving on the township board is the best way to be involved and make a positive impact on our community.
My absolute top priority has always been non-partisan representation. I have always strived to be an equal representative on the board and represent all citizens of our township. My second priority is to keep a close eye on development amongst our township. It will be important to stay in close contact with our planning commission as they continue to address this issue and have conversation about how to best address the progression. My third top priority is to always be available to any citizen that has a question or concern. I have always had an open line for anyone and will continue to do that.
I have always liked a phone call, the best form of communication in my opinion. I have always been available for a call from and concerned citizen and will continue to do that.
