I spent a great deal of time during the ILEA process, legislative session, and now IPEC testifying and organizing on behalf of IPS, and I kept seeing decisions made without the people they affect. When Dr. Gayle Cosby recommended me for the District 2 vacancy, I felt a responsibility to step up. As a product of public schools, a former teacher, and a researcher who studies how school choice affects marginalized communities, I bring both lived and scholarly experience to this fight.
I understand that teacher working conditions are student learning conditions. As a former teacher myself, I'll fight for competitive pay and benefits, annual raises that keep up with inflation, and a fair contract for every IPS teacher. I'll push professional development and leadership pipelines that treat teachers as experts, not just evaluate them, and I'll advocate to extend protections to Innovation Network teachers so all IPS educators can organize without retaliation.
As a former teacher, and someone who experienced bullying growing up, I know unsafe climates get overlooked until it's too late. I'll push restorative practices over exclusionary discipline, real support for im/migrant, LGBTQ+, and racially minoritized students, and transparency around safety and expulsion data so families can trust every IPS building.
IPS is being asked to serve students with the greatest needs while funding shrinks, so I'd push for student-centered budgeting: transparent accounting of where every dollar goes, with resources prioritized to reach classrooms first. I support a moratorium on new schools so we reinvest in the ones we have instead of spreading thinner, and I'll push to renegotiate contracts with schools receiving in-kind IPS services and for sustained Statehouse pressure, which is sitting on billions in reserves.
Charter and Innovation schools are here, educating our kids, and that doesn't change overnight. But accountability has to be equal. Charters were allowed to open and replicate for 26 years without demonstrating actual need, facing far fewer barriers to closure than IPS schools. I support a moratorium on new schools, the same performance and financial transparency standards for every school type, and renegotiating contracts where IPS subsidizes Innovation schools through in-kind services.
