House District 36 is in mid-western Spartanburg County and adjacent Greenville County. The House of Representatives consists of 124 part-time citizen who represent single-member districts. Representatives must be citizens of the United States and the State of South Carolina, at least 21 years old at the time of their election, residents of the district in which they are elected, and registered voters. Virginia McLean is a dedicated community leader, educator, and advocate running for the South Carolina House of Representatives to bring a fresh, creative perspective to Columbia.
As an "Army Brat" I learned about sacrifice and discipline from an early age. I also have a deep sense of service to others and the community. As a former preschool teacher, I am dedicated to supporting our public schools and educators. I bring firsthand experience to understanding the needs of our schools and how the importance of early childhood education. As a minister for the people, I know how important it is to listen to others. I also understand the importance of teamwork, communication, and compromise.
1. I will make sure we are fully funding our public schools and educators. I will make sure that our public tax dollars stay in public schools.
2. I will advocate for free, universal preschool and reinstating the SC Child Care Scholarship Program (formerly known as SC Voucher Program). Both of these will make sure families have the support they need to take care of their families while also working. These programs will also ensure all children have an equal educational foundation.
3. I will work to raise the minimum wage in South Carolina. SC does not have a state-level minimum wage and defaults to the federal standard. Raising the minimum wage would also directly impact the local economy.
More transparency and accessibility of committee hearings would increase public trust. Live-streaming all subcommittee meetings, expanding the public notification timelines for bill revisions, and publishing all committee votes online would increase that transparency and trust. Holding multiple, mandatory town halls when not in session would also increase accountability to the people.
