A strong military is a key component of protecting America’s national security. I support continuing to fund our military to provide the best defense necessary. Our nation’s security also depends upon our diplomatic and intelligence capacity, which have been gutted by the Trump administration. We must fully fund our diplomatic and intelligence agencies, such as USAID, and other non-military diplomatic efforts. Secure borders are a final part of national security that must be carefully managed. The United States must know who is coming into our country, and what they intend to do once they get here–which does not mean closed doors. We benefit from law-abiding people immigrating to our country, working, and paying into our system.
America’s government was designed to reject monarchy and prevent any one branch from gaining too much power. Our system of checks and balances protects individual liberty by ensuring Congress, the President, and the courts hold one another accountable. Today, Congress has failed to exercise that responsibility, allowing unchecked executive overreach on spending, war powers, and policymaking. As your Senator, I will ensure judicial appointees are qualified, demand accountability from the President and cabinet, and insist Congress reclaim its constitutional role over war and spending. I will fight to restore a balance of powers and push back against executive overreach that threatens our democracy and constitutional system.
The recent Supreme Court ruling struck down the part of the Voting Rights Act that helped ensure minority representation in Congress, but it did not prevent partisan gerrymandering. Now, states including South Carolina are rushing to redraw districts to predetermine election outcomes in favor of one party. That is wrong.
I oppose any effort to make voting harder for American citizens. Claims of widespread voter fraud have repeatedly been proven false, while restrictive laws disproportionately burden women, minorities, the poor, and people with disabilities. As Senator, I would oppose unfair redistricting efforts and support bipartisan commissions that draw fair districts and protect the voice of the people.

I support U.S. national security policies and practices consistent with our Constitution, civil liberties, and human rights. Our branch of government must wisely use its national security authority to prevent unilateral government overreach of executive and judicial branches. Areas I would focus on: 1) Repairing alliances and coalitions damaged by Trump Administration actions, which prevent us from addressing shared threats; 2) Continuing to strengthen intelligence, diplomatic and counterterrorism capacities while protecting privacy; 3) Keeping our military strong and morale high with proper care for active duty military and veterans; 4) Thoughtful trade and energy policies; 5) no weapons/ funding that supports genocide and/or forever wars.
Congress and the US Senate play a key role in protecting the rule of law, the integrity of the judicial branch through tightening of transparency, accountability, democratic processes and anti-corruption rules.
This branch must stand apart from the President and his or her administration, fulfilling its oversight role in order to provide consent of the governed. Changing the balance of power in Washington will result in a reinvigoration of this role.
I exercised this commitment during my appointment as Foreperson to the State Grand Jury directed to conduct South Carolina’s longest public corruption investigation in 2016. The investigation was noted by The State newspaper as “a unique achievement in state politics in the modern era".
It is critical to ensure that the public has confidence in our election process in 2026 and beyond. All South Carolinians must be able to exercise their right to vote without undue burden. I will continue to support the two key federal voting rights bills that combat voter suppression efforts, since Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was effectively dismantled by the US Supreme Court this year. My immediate areas of focus: protecting vote by mail; restoring full voting rights to the formerly incarcerated, and improving their education and access to the vote; promoting and protecting access for voters will disabilities; replacing gerrymandering by legislators with independent commissions.

I support investing in military readiness but not preemptive wars. I believe the best way to secure our country is through free trade. I support border security and a reasonable, compassionate immigration policy. We need better immigration laws. I support a free market for education, but believe our issuance of visas should follow sound economic logic, not individual schools' revenue needs.
Congress should write clear, reasonable laws so that they are not misinterpreted by the Executive branch or difficult to interpret in the judiciary. Congress should exercise its oversight of the Executive branch through the budget and confirmation processes. Congress should exercise its check on the judiciary through a non-political review of judicial appointments. Congressional oversight is an under-used and highly-politicized power.
Congressional oversight of elections, review of elections at the state and federal level, and serious inquiry into accusations of fraud. Moreover, putting an end to the parties' stranglehold over elections from ballot access to fundraising. The parties have become powerful corporations that use elections to raise revenue and amass power. As such, they manipulate the voting process from media coverage to voter ID, disenfranchising millions of Americans. Citizens watchdog organizations, like the LWV, should be empowered to call attention to irregularities and gain attention and support from lawmakers to investigate those accusations.
