Qualifications
Mom of school children, experience providing services and oversight to all age ranges (infants to elderly) and at risk populations, business leadership/ coach, volunteer at many local organizations and experience on multiple boards.
Education
Bachelor of Science, Double Major in Psychology and Family Studies: Child Development. Certified Addiction Counselor.
Why: 1. My children, their friends, our neighbors; we love where we live and see our entire Island as our neighborhood. I want the best for my children and our community. 2. Answering the requests of my constituents and staff (both local and district) who insisted I run again based upon the results and advocacy I have provided them and our community at large; even beyond my district.
Priorities: My top priorities are continuing to enhance transparency, teacher retention which I believe fuels the priority of student achievement and lastly I’ve been working on increased parental inclusion/involvement in education as it is tied to each student’s success. Higher teacher retention = increased educational continuity.
As a parent/ direct stakeholder I have not had issues with engagement or trust as fellow parents and educators see me often and give me feedback freely. Much of that feedback is that we have too many meetings that are too long and too far away. We live in a time where everyone’s time is limited, people are recognizing that time is our one most valuable asset so I'd like to see us holding meetings (strictly focused on substantive issues, efficient decision-making, and measurable results) our community deems valuable and a worthy investment of their time; this would increase stakeholder involvement. Many of the issues with engagement, trust, efficiency and effectiveness are solved by listening; followed with clear/ direct communication.
First we need to recognize that every student and every family is unique which means they each have a different definition of success for their child/student. As a governing body, we need to have at the forefront of our minds and decisions/votes the ultimate goal of student success for all students at all times. As a large county we do have many challenges as our districts are often as unique as the students we serve, but we do have an ever growing myriad of programs and tools available. There are new programs on the horizon, which is hopeful. Some of our local issues are also challenges on a national level that no one has found solutions for - yet. I say that only to bring awareness to the fact that we are not alone.
Technology needs to be handled & researched carefully prior to implementation. We currently utilize one of the top cybersecurity firms in the nation. Technology is unavoidable but I do hear from the community that they feel overwhelmed by tech and don't want their children using it constantly; they need to know how to utilize the tool without being reliant on it. With my background in psych & child development I also have serious concerns about tech overuse and brain development.Digital Privacy is currently at the forefront of my decisions as I see AI using information, photos, etc. in manners for which they weren't/aren't intended by the creator. Our children & educators also need to learn how to decipher real content vs. fake/AI content.
