Candidate For Office
Kyle Hansen
I have served as a member of Pomfret's Zoning Board since 2023. I was recently appointed to fill a vacancy on the Selectboard. I obtained my bachelors' degree in political science from Norwich University in 2021, and my masters' degree in climate and environmental policy from Vermont Law and Graduate School in 2024. I coach a local youth mountain bike team, since 2022. I have worked in the planning and zoning field since 2024 - from regional planning, to municipal zoning departments. I have experienced firsthand how expensive it is for young people to start a life of their own, and how costs continue to rise while wages stagnate. Many of my classmates and friends have moved due to the cost of living. I will fight for an affordable Vermont.
We can fund our schools, and provide tax relief to Vermonters, by making our tax system more fair, shifting the burden onto those with the means to pay. We cannot force the consolidation of our brick and mortar schools. Our supervisory unions must be allowed to work together to cut costs. The wealthiest among us - some full time residents, to second home owners, to private equity companies, are not paying their fair share into the system. The tax burden has thus fallen on working and retired Vermonters. We must make a law that no municipality may tax a second home at a lower rate than a full time residence. We must also regulate short term rentals, and create a "pied-a-terre" tax to raise additional revenue for the state education fund.
We need to repeal and replace Act181. A new bill would strengthen the Act250 housing exemption areas to include all areas served by municipal water and wastewater systems outside of the floodplain. Act250 will continue to protect our wetlands, ridgelines, and other areas of ecological significance, and must be protected, without imposing additional burdens on rural residents and towns. We need to create incentives for the construction of multi-family buildings, and multi-bedroom apartments. Right now most housing units being constructed are either short term rentals, vacation homes, or studio apartments with one parking space each. We must change the rules to require two parking spaces for all units with two or more bedrooms.
