I have lived in the South Lyon School District since 1978. The first few years were in Salem Township then Green Oak Township.
Currently I live in the city of South Lyon . I have been using the library since 1978.
I have a BSW from Northern Michigan University and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan.
I've had a variety of social work jobs including psychiatric social work and medical social work. I am currently retired.
I am running for the library board because I think the library is a very very important institution in our country and I've always wanted to be involved above and beyond using it for myself and family.
It would be an honor to be elected to the board and be able to assist in the operations of this wonderful institution.
I am looking forward to learn about the issues facing the library.
My love of books led me to a career in English education as a public high school English teacher for the past 26 years. I joined the library board in 2021 and have enjoyed my time serving my community alongside such a passionate group of library advocates. I would love the opportunity to continue or a second term.
Beyond my career in literacy education, I bring various leadership skills to the table as well: Legislative Debate Chair, Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association where I made policy decisions with a board of ten members governing statewide speech and debate activities; Education Team Member, South Lyon First United Methodist Church where we oversee educational programming with a team of approximately ten members; South Lyon Pumas Youth Lacrosse Board secretary, where we coordinate coaches, registration, and team events
Leadership and public service experience coupled with my love of public libraries make me an ideal candidate for this role.
1. Resource Allocation: The library board is responsible for overseeing how tax dollars are spent. As a board member, I believe my job is to listen carefully to recommendations of the library staff, consider and listen to the needs of the community, and make decisions as a team that best meet all of those needs.
2. Open access to information: A public library is foundational to our democracy. As a board member I believe it is my duty to ensure access to information is open and available to all residents in our community. As the current chair of the library's policy committee, I have worked with the library staff and the other committee members to ensure our policies meet this need.
3. Continuing to be a space for all in our community: We are blessed to have such a beautiful, well-equipped library in our community. I believe we need to continue exploring ways to expand our services by thinking beyond traditional books: meeting spaces, programming, events, etc.
I am currently on the board. I was asked to serve the remainder of a vacated position and elected by the board to do so. Afterwards, I was elected for a 4 year term which ends this year. I am retired, 72 yrs old, and had worked in Design & Engineering from 1980-2019. I hope to represent and have represented the patrons of the Salem South Lyon District Library to the best of my ability.
1. The library's budget is among the most critical. I will consider the use of tax payer's money to fulfill the operations of the library in the best possible way while serving on the budget committee as I have for the last 4 years.
2. Maintaining the library and it's facilities is crucial. I will continue to serve of the facilities committee to help ensure the library can operate smoothly and with the best possible amenities that can be offered.
3. The library staff is of the utmost importance to keeping the library running and welcoming to the public. I will continue to support the library staff and consider all the board's recommendations concerning the staff going forward.
