I have been fortunate to represent the Avondale learning community now for three consecutive terms (12 years). During that time, the Board of Education, through partnership with numerous stakeholders throughout Avondale, have moved from a deficit District to a thriving learning community both fiscally and educationally. Personally, my children, and now my grandchildren attend(ed) Avondale schools. I hold over 1,000 hours of continuing Board of Education training; holding a Master Diamond certification through the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB).
Like many Districts throughout Oakland County and the State of Michigan, as the State and Federal governments place increased responsibilities on Districts, we continue to struggle with keeping up with inflationary pressures for our highly qualified teachers and support professionals. Our Board has a close partnership with our bargaining units and continues to partner with them in a transparent fashion. As special education needs continue to rise for the State and District, our Human Resource and Special Education team utilize creative hiring practices to meet this need that grows every year. Finally, with the proliferation of artificial intelligence being used in education, our Board has adopted policies and continues to focus on responsible, balanced use of technology and digital citizenship. Maintaining balance between "traditional pen and paper" and ensuring our students are prepared for a technically advance workforce is a Board priority.
