During the time I have had the privilege of serving on the VCL Board, I have watched Vandercook be at its highest and be at its lowest. I know the importance of loyalty and love for this district, what it stands for and this community. I have investments in leadership that have come, gone, and are still here. I take pride in attending as many events as possible to show my support for students, staff, coaches and administration. Being at events also gives me an opportunity to talk to people one-on-one to listen and receive feedback.
I would say my top three, in no particular order, are improving academic success/growth for all students (which means hiring and supporting the best staff), community engagement and improving our financial stability and transparency. Vandercook wants to see our students learn, grow, and achieve great success that will pour back into our community. As generations are rising and our world is changing, it’s important to have good leaders who understand the greatest leadership is their service. I want to continue to help make that happen for students, their families, the community, and our staff.
Safety and academics. Safe schools and viable curriculum for our teachers to utilize are very important. Both of these things are needed for student success. Budget is a scary word for every school district, but we have seen great leadership rise to get us funds, such as the infrastucture grant, and I will continue to work hard to help make this is a success.
The core need for people (students, families, and staff) is to know they are wanted, cared about, loved and welcomed. It’s important that we make sure each student is seen, listened to and time taken to invest in their education. All students and families have a belonging at VCL. We have activities and staff that empower our students in academic, sports and leadership. I will always listen to the good and rough stuff and walk alongside to help make improvements and adjustments when needed.
The problem isn’t the technology, it’s how it’s used. When used for educational purposes, it's great as it challenges young minds and brings creative ways to teach. There needs to be a system in place for students to think critically and do their own work. As VCL looks at things to encourage social interaction, a number of games were purchased to encourage student socialization during lunch time rather than being on phones (which are banned this year during the school day per board policy).
