I have lived in the Northwest School District for 29 years with my wife and 5 children. I have served this country as a United States Marine. I have served this community as Postmaster(Retired) in Rives Junction. I am a graduate of Jackson College. I have attended almost all of the school board meetings for the last 5 years. I am a Northwest Gold Club Member. I volunteer at the school to help students learn to read and do math.
My top objective and the district’s goal should be to improve the educational experience for all students. We should be continuously reviewing and refining our processes and procedures so that we remain focused on that goal. Brainstorming ideas to increase math and reading scores needs to be a priority. I have a goal to bring back the trades to the school to increase this opportunity for our students. The school can teach our students to be plumbers, electricians, mechanics, etc., and the students would not have to go to college to get a skilled trade job right out of high school and serve our communities.
If that occurs, the school board needs to focus on the following concepts: does our spending help students learn, help teachers teach or does it help keep our students safe? If it doesn’t, we would have to consider redirecting those resources elsewhere.
To make every student and family feel welcome, the school board needs to build an inclusive culture, clear communication paths, and welcoming school buildings. The school staff should welcome all visitors warmly and hold events to build teamwork and relationships.
School districts should not try to ban social media and AI. Instead, they need to set smart boundaries for when they can be used and when they cannot be used and teach students how to use these powerful tools responsibly and critically. I believe that cell phones should be kept out of the classroom.
