I have been part of the Michigan Center School District Board of Education for the past 4 years. I have been in education for 26 years. My passion for teaching is in the classroom as well as on the Board of Education. We need to provide the best learning environment for our students, families and staff.
My top objectives is to provide a safe learning environment while every students can achieve greatness. I believe we have to change with the times and make sure we are using curriculum that allows all students to be successful in their own way.
If school funding were to decrease, we have to make sure that student needs are taken care of first. We have to make sure the buildings are safe, warm and comfortable. Making hard choices can be tricky but we have to do what is necessary for the students first.
Our Principals and Superintendent are great at providing families and students the opportunities to be welcomed and involved. I like visiting the schools to see the students and staff. If I run into a new family, I will always introduce myself and see if there is anything I can do to help them.
We definitely see lots of challenges with technology. For example, social media has become a place for people to share everything. We need to continue to remind our students that social media is for sharing greatness and encouraging people not bashing people. At Michigan Center, we talk to the students about approaching the issue with kindness and diginity. As far as AI, the district should not allow students to use it to do their class work.
