The top challenges are attainable housing shortages that price out many workers and families, understaffed police and fire departments, traffic and infrastructure needs (especially toward Spring Creek), slow permitting that delays housing and business growth, and careful fiscal management amid sales-tax fluctuations.
I will streamline permitting for faster approvals, support recruitment and funding for public safety, advance practical road and water projects, partner on more housing supply, and keep budgets transparent and balanced to protect essential services without overburdening taxpayers.
I support practical supply-side solutions: modernizing and speeding up the permitting process so builders can deliver units faster; encouraging a mix of housing types through updated zoning and targeted incentives; partnering with developers, the county, and available state/rural programs; ensuring infrastructure can support new housing; and reducing unnecessary regulatory delays while maintaining safety standards.
The goal is more attainable homes and rentals for workers and families without compromising Elko’s character or creating unsustainable costs.
I support a practical, coordinated approach: partnering with local nonprofits, the county, and state resources to expand temporary shelter and transitional housing; connecting people with mental health, substance-use treatment, and job services; strengthening code enforcement and outreach to protect public safety and neighborhoods; and preventing homelessness by increasing attainable housing. I would also explore creating a basic public bus system to improve access to jobs, services, medical care, and housing opportunities for residents who lack reliable transportation.

Elko faces a few core pressures. Its biggest risk is reliance on mining—when gold prices drop, jobs and revenue follow. The fix is diversification (logistics, remote work, local services) without abandoning mining.
Housing is tight during boom cycles, so zoning reform and mixed-income development matter. Workforce retention is another issue, so investing in amenities, healthcare, and small business growth would help stimulate the local economy.
I’d focus on supply, stability, and speed. First, update zoning to allow duplexes, ADUs, and townhomes . Second, work with the building department and city planner for permits and locations of projects with that could be creative on development infrastructure. Third, partner with employers and developers on mixed-income housing. I’d also create incentives for long-term rentals over short-term use. Finally, invest in infrastructure (water, roads) so new housing can be built where it’s needed.
In Elko, homelessness is smaller in scale but harder to manage due to limited services. I’d focus on practical, local solutions. First, connect them to local outreach services. Then adopt a housing-first approach, getting people into stable housing. Second, expand partnerships with local outreach groups and nonprofits for shelter, case management, and resources.
I support our small, coordinated resource centers for mental health, addiction treatment, and job placement. Prevention matters too, rental assistance and mediation to stop evictions before they happen. Finally, improve data tracking so the city responds efficiently rather than reactively.
