I worked in the Anchor Bay School District for 50 years, starting in 1971. I began my career in Education as a 6th Grade Teacher and over 30 years of teaching I also taught 5th Grade and 2nd Grade. Eventually, I had the opportunity to become the Principal of Lottie M. Schmidt Elementary School. I enjoyed a great career in Anchor Bay and retired in 2021. I would love to still be part of the Anchor Bay family and offer my experience and continued dedication to the district. I was an employee for those 50 years, but I was also a parent of an Anchor Bay student. I joined the Band Boosters and eventually became the president of the group in my daughter’s last three years of high school. I can’t imagine doing anything more rewarding than volunteering to be on Anchor Bay’s School Board. I feel that I can offer a wealth of history and knowledge about the district to help guide the Board in a positive way.
I do know that money has always been an issue for the Anchor Bay School District. I would assume that it is an issue for many districts. However, we have always done our best in Anchor Bay to use the foundation allowance per student wisely. Lately, however, I have wondered why Anchor Bay has been losing teachers and staff to other districts. We can certainly inquire as to what type of incentives will keep employees in Anchor Bay. Incentives do not always have to include money. With some thought and partnership with staff, there are items that are powerful when creating strong commitments to the Anchor Bay School District. We have a great deal of dedicated staff in our Anchor Bay team and we need to keep them.
Anchor Bay does have a good safety plan in place. Employees have been trained and staff practice with the students throughout the school year. There is a schedule set up at the beginning of each year for Drills that has to be followed and reported to the Macomb Public Safety Department. Each building has a designated location that the children can go to if an evacuation is necessary. In addition, I have read about the added precautions that Anchor Bay has made. They have hired a safety administrator who worked as a police officer in Macomb County. Since 2021 guards, who are former police officers, have been added to each building. Also, the Bond has made it possible to change some of the entrances to the older buildings.
I do know that when I went to school most students were encouraged to prepare for college. Over the years school districts were eliminating many of the vocational education courses. However, people in education realized that NOT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO GO TO COLLEGE!! Thankfully, the pendulum has changed its course. Educators realized how important vocational courses are needed. I believe that Anchor Bay has made great strides by offering many courses to allow our students a choice. Courses such as, Welding, Auto, Hospitality and Culinary, Medical Education, Engineering, Graphic arts and advance Graphic Arts, and construction trades at many levels to name a few, are offered in Anchor Bay. We need to continue to prepare our students.
