I plan to address these by supporting multi-year capital planning, transparent budgeting, and careful review of every major development proposal for real infrastructure capacity—roads, schools, water, and emergency services. We must meet our legal housing requirements, but we can do so in a way that protects open space, neighborhood character, and long-term costs to residents. Equally important is restoring open, collaborative Council processes so residents feel heard before decisions are made. Steady, practical leadership focused on what actually works for Mendham is the path forward.
I have lived in Mendham Borough for more than 16 years with my wife Colleen and our three children, all of whom attended Mendham schools. Professionally, I am a certified matrimonial attorney with over 24 years of experience handling complex matters that require preparation, judgment, and clear decision-making. I founded and ran my own law firm here in town and co-owned the Mendham Creamery, which employed many local high school students. I currently serve as Deputy Coordinator of the Borough’s Office of Emergency Management and on the District XA Ethics Committee.
A healthy local economy begins with keeping the cost of living and doing business sustainable for families, retirees, and the small businesses that define Main Street. I will support disciplined budgeting, exploration of shared services where they make sense, and careful review of capital needs so essential services remain strong without unnecessary pressure on taxpayers.
At the same time, responsible commercial and mixed-use development that generates ratables and local jobs can strengthen our tax base—provided the infrastructure can support it and residential character is preserved. Economic vitality and quality of life go hand in hand when growth is planned thoughtfully with clear cost-benefit analysis and genuine resident input. My focus will be practical stewardship that helps Mendham remain a place people are proud to call home.
Federal immigration policy is set in Washington and largely outside the authority of a Borough Council. Like many communities, Mendham can feel secondary effects on housing, schools, and public services when national systems are strained. Our local responsibility is to enforce the laws within our control, maintain public safety, deliver services lawfully and within available resources, and treat every resident with basic fairness under the Constitution.
I will support clear, lawful cooperation between local police and federal authorities where appropriate, oppose any local policies that conflict with federal law or create unnecessary liability, and keep the focus on competent, transparent municipal governance. The most constructive thing we can do is steady local leadership that prioritizes safety, fiscal responsibility, and quality of life for the people who live here.
Environmental quality, open space, and functional infrastructure are all essential to what makes Mendham special. Development pressures tied to our housing obligations raise legitimate concerns about stormwater, traffic, tree canopy, and cumulative impact. I support meeting legal requirements through careful site-plan review that requires applicants to demonstrate adequate infrastructure capacity and meaningful mitigation, while protecting sensitive areas and neighborhood character.
We should prioritize maintenance of existing roads, stormwater systems, and emergency access, favor development patterns that minimize unnecessary sprawl, and insist on transparent public discussion of long-term costs and environmental effects before decisions are finalized. Balance is possible: lawful growth that does not sacrifice the natural buffers, clean water, and livable streets residents value. Practical, evidence-based stewardship is the way to protect both the environment and our community’s future.
There are currently three potential projects, in various stages, that will add 300+ housing units to our small town, and we still won’t meet our state affordable housing requirement. At the rate of 20% of each project deemed “affordable,” we’ll potentially double our population to meet state requirements. Have we asked if our infrastructure and environment can support this? I’ve been trying to get the answer to this question. This is huge news and Mendham Borough citizens should be actively involved. As a Councilman, I want to bring transparency and new thinking to this process. I will challenge the status quo to get what’s best for Mendham. And I will make sure development is conducted with the Borough’s best interests in mind.
As a management consultant, I questioned everything. I never accepted any premise until it was factually supported. Big change requires critical thinking, careful planning, and sometimes, pushing back.
I will investigate grants to study highest-and-best use of Borough retail space and support owners in pursuing identified candidates
Our local contractors employ immigrants that have lived in and contributed to NJ for many years. They should not live in fear. And I am concerned that the current arrests and detainments do not follow the USA’s rule of law and anyone in the country is entitled to due process, regardless of immigration status.
I’ve been trying to find out from our town website more information about our master plan and other land use information and it’s been difficult. One of the reasons we are now faced with potential overdevelopment is we didn’t proactively create sound affordable housing plan – and I would lead that effort.
