The high cost of living is crushing Americans. Electricity prices have risen 5% this year. I am a strong supporter of the Energy Bills Relief Act to expand access to low-cost power and fund home heating and cooling, and require large energy users to pay their fair share. When Trump proposed terminating the LIHEAP program, I demanded it maintain full funding. Food prices are up 22% since 2022. One-third of our state’s residents cannot afford basic necessities. I’ve introduced amendments to require 12 months of continuous full Medicaid and CHIP benefits coverage for pregnant/ postpartum persons and cosponsored legislation reversing nearly $200 billion in SNAP cuts. With rising gas prices from Trump’s war, I’ve repeatedly voted to end it I’ve also been a strong critic of Trump’s tariffs which raised prices. Finally, I will continue putting pressure demanding more aggressive actions by the DOJ and FTC to crack down on corporate price gouging and break up monopolies.
In addition to the policies above, I also am a strong supporter of efforts to lower the cost of education. College costs increased over 10% in 2025, putting a strain on families and challenging young people’s economic prospects if they cannot afford it. That is why I have strongly supported programs to increase access to student loans and assistance, and led efforts demanding the DOJ defend and support the Hispanic Serving Institutions program, which provides grants to expand educational opportunities and improve Hispanic students’ access to college.
Expensive health care is a terrible burden that bankrupts families. This Congress, I’ve sponsored at least 30 separate bills focused on fixing health care in this country. One of them would, at long last, add dental, vision, and hearing to Medicare. This is a top goal of mine. Going forward, there are several broad areas I am focusing on. That starts with restoring enhanced ACA premium credits so we can cut the high out-of-pocket costs. In the 120th Congress I would also seek to reverse the cruel Medicaid reductions and work requirements and expand eligibility and services. Drug pricing is also vital. We must revive and expand historic drug pricing reforms enacted under the Inflation Reduction Act. The cuts to the NIH and CDC have been devastating. We should be rebuilding our institutions, as well as holding accountable the corruption at HHS. As America ages, we must explore how we can make the caregiving economy more affordable. I support lasting reforms which pair border security with pathways to citizenship for immigrants who have contributed positively to our economy and the social fabric of our communities. When I took office, one of the first things I did was visit our southern border to see it for myself. The Trump administration’s immigration policies have gone too far and are terrorizing our communities. I have seen that, too, on my visits to Delaney Hall, ICE’s infamous detention facility in our state. Americans want common sense change. A few years ago, there was a deal for a comprehensive immigration reform package. Unfortunately, the President called on his party to kill it to keep the issue unresolved. When it comes to immigration, I believe in balance: respect for our laws while preserving the dignity of others. I will support that balanced approach, as well as oversight and accountability for the abuses that have occurred under this government.
Since the Dobbs decision, efforts to enact cruel bans, restrict IVF and birth control access, and prosecute women have increased. As a state legislator, I repeatedly voted to codify reproductive rights. One of the first actions I took in Congress was cosponsoring legislation to restore Roe’s protections. I’ve also supported legislation protecting the right to birth control, preserving IVF, and expanding FMLA coverage. I have joined federal amicus briefs challenging (1) Medicaid restrictions on reproductive care, (2) the VA Department’s federal abortion access rule, and (3) FDA’s efforts to reverse medication abortion approval. I am dedicated to these rights and access to healthcare—and when Democrats take control of the House, I’ll continue demanding my colleagues and leadership pass these bills. We must remember all that was done to achieve the rights under Roe. I know what’s at stake—we need politicians who won’t back down, and I am committed to fighting in the 120th Congress.
As the only New Jersey Democrat on the House Transportation Committee, I have been heavily focused on these issues. I fought to include provisions in the Water Resources bill requiring the Corps to account for natural and nature-based features for ecosystem services and habitat restoration. I’ve seen firsthand the damage caused by extreme weather and climate change—waters rise, roads crumble, buildings and homes destroyed. Flooding is a major problem in my district, which is why I introduced legislation that would identify areas most at risk of future disasters caused by water infrastructure failures and develop new ways to provide funding to mitigate water disasters. I’ve also introduced legislation to address backlogs for dredging rivers that cause flooding while still ensuring contaminated sediments don’t spill into our waterways. I’ve also cosponsored bills expanding project eligibility to fix bridge corrosion and damage caused by extreme weather.
Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. President Trump’s actions to destroy this right—from inciting an insurrection to stop the 2020 certification on January 6, threatening to send FBI agents to seize election equipment, to now issuing an executive order to restrict mail-in ballots—have been why I am fighting back. I’ve led my New Jersey Democratic colleagues in an oversight letter demanding the Postmaster General to defy this illegal order. I’ve joined a circuit court amicus brief supporting the states’ lawsuit challenging this order. With the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act, one of the first things I did in Congress was cosponsor legislation reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act. I have also fought for increased election security grant funding, poll worker protection funding, and have also supported legislation that improves information sharing to multilingual voters about upcoming elections. Elections are sacred and I am not backing down.
