My family owned a retail business for over 50 years, 40 of those years on Magnolia Ave. As a family operation, you are in charge of everything. Here are some examples...trash disposal, customer service, purchasing, accounting, restroom clean-up, unloading shipments, hiring, firing, marketing. We would contemplate and oversee at least 5 valuable decisions within the first hour of each day. We had a payroll to meet every two weeks.
In addition, I have served in leadership of a number of local non-profits and youth related activities. Boys/Girls Club, Child Advocacy Center, Auburn Chamber of Commerce, Sunday School Teacher, youth athletic coach.
Small business and civic work are proving grounds for my role. Hard decisions and people-daily.
1- Continue to provide needed support to our Public Safety Departments. That includes a new police precinct on the south end of Auburn.
2-Commit the needed resources to aggressively improve traffic flow by updating identified intersections and widening congested roadways.
3- Advocate for improved access to healthcare. This could include expansion of Auburn Campus of EAH, hiring of specialist, opening of family practices that provide access to more
of Auburn's families.
4- Begin the development of Richland Park. The initial project is slated to center around youth girls softball and youth boys baseball.
5- Continue to recruit high tech, value added manufacturing companies that provide excellent jobs for our citizens.
6-Sales tax producers!
Our citizens have asked us to work on traffic flow and we will as stated above. Traffic projects require patience and understanding by all of us but I am confident our engineers and consultants will provide an action plan that makes sense.
The growth of the city which includes Auburn Univ has to be managed. Every annexation must check the box of needed city services, road access, school transportation. Over the last couple of years the city council has closely scrutinized tracts of land that apply for annexation. I expect that to continue.
Any AU enrollment increase must be evaluated based on local outcomes. We have a finite road network that serves the campus and downtown. It will take town and gown to collaborate on these upgrades.
I value quality of life based on a number of metrics.
Is Auburn a safe community? APD and AFD continue to provide excellent coverage for our city.
Is healthcare availability growing for everyone? The development of the new facility on campus operated by EAH has been a gamechanger for emergency service and medical services.
Parks, Recreation, Entertainment improving? Over the last 8 years we have seen an expansion of the soccer complex, creation of Lake Wilmore Center and playing fields, Town Creek Inclusive Playground that is 90% ADA access. Pearson Park is a peaceful space in N. Auburn. The Gouge Center is allowing our citizens to experience performances than traditionally mandated a trip to a neighboring city.
Yes-QoL is better.
We are very attentive to the citizens who reach out to us. I see everyday the effort that everyone of our elected representatives are providing on behalf of a citizen that has a question, a need , or has a problem.
The fix-it app delivers direct communication to specific departments based on the concern from each citizen.
Our environ. services team makes 1.7m stops each year with minimal, very minimal mistakes.
The care and protection that is provided by public safety is tremendous. I'm especially proud of how they manage gameday.
Parks and Rec runs programs for 1000's of people annually using multiple facilities, fields, activities.
We can always improve. Communication and traffic are on-going areas of evaluation.
Auburn receives resources from the citizens from 4 primary sources.
1- Sales Tax
2- Occupational Tax
3- Business License, etc
4- Ad valorem
Our forefathers established the sources and their %. They provide protection against relying on a single source to fund local government. Sales tax is right at 50% which is why it is critical that Auburn citizens shop in Auburn businesses. Remember 30% of sales tax collections is designated to Auburn City Schools.
As far as the future, internet tax(SSUT) is growing as more people shop online. We are watching trends to better understand its impact on local business.
Lodging taxes are growing. Auburn is more than just football for visitors.
Good retailers, restaurants, industries, and AU support CoA$.
Once the 2018 elected leadership was sworn-in we made immediate changes to our council meetings. We approved multiple opportunities for public input.1- At the beginning of the meeting for items on the agenda.2- During the meeting for items that included a public hearing.3- At the conclusion of the meeting for any topic a citizen would like to discuss.
Following the meeting the staff provides a written summary for social media. The Mayors Minutes provide a visual summery of the agenda and the council's decisions on Instagram and Facebook.
The Mayor appears on local radio to preview the meeting and the City Manager appears on radio the morning after to review the meeting.
E notifier is an excellent resource too!
We are open to new ideas.
I am very proud of our city departments and staff. There are always opportunities to improve and that is continuously evaluated. I'm not clear what is intended by "accessibility". We have added a new fire station, new parks , better recycling center and single stream recycling, we will soon open a 2nd library. We look forward to building the south precinct for the Auburn Police Dept. Over the next term we will begin to develop a new park in North Auburn, Richland Park. The city will also increase the miles of city sidewalks, greenways, and trails.
We strive to provide city services efficiently and fairly.
The library extends top notch customer service to all ages and interests. Our environmental services team makes 1.7m stops a year!
