My entire life has been here in Noblesville and supporting the children of our community in a variety of capacities.
My own K-12 education was right here in Noblesville. I have three children: two whom have graduated from Noblesville & one is still here in school. I'm a Noblesville Native as are past generations of my family. I was a Substitute Teacher here for five years until I was elected to the School Board. Prior to this, I have served on the board for the preschool my children attended, I have & continue to be a parent volunteer, team mom, chaperone, & serve on the board for our local youth football program for the last 13 years and counting. Rooted in Noblesville. Invested in Our Kids.
Having been on the board for one full term, I have definitely learned a lot & have more to learn. Having the flexibility to make such a commitment is essential. This job requires serious dedication & commitment in many aspects which doesn't work for a lot of people. You cannot come into this position with an agenda other than to focus on the student outcomes & obtaining/retaining quality educators & other staff members. We're all a team each coming from a different background & experiences so we have a lot of different viewpoints & opinions but we are so good at collaborating because we're all here for the same reasons....the students.
School finance is so difficult, by design I'm sure! There are so many laws & regulations implemented by the state which make it nearly impossible to change anything. Since we are a public school, not a private or charter school, we are under the direction of the INDOE which means we have numerous audits, processes, protocols, rules & regulations. I would love to make school finance easier to understand for everyone, in an effort to be as transparent as we can. When people don't understand it, they claim we're not being transparent, when that truly isn't it at all! School budgets just do not work like your own personal budget. I would love to either decrease the cost of teaching students without sacrificing their education, so that the amount the state pays school districts is enough, or increase the amount the state pays. Instead, the amount the state pays decreases while the cost of teaching continues to rise therefore growing the gap & increasing the need for referendums.
We receive regular reports from the superintendent on everything he does. We have a review process that includes the superintendent providing us his top three goals for the year & the steps to be used to accomplish those goals. We have a rubric we use for the official evaluation & we also have a questionnaire we send out to the administrative team. None of hesitate to hold him accountable for anything we don't agree with or that doesn't support mission & vision for the district.
Under my term on the board, we have already added a second opportunity for public comments during our board meetings. Due to the Open Door Law & Robert's Rules of Order, we are limited in how some things are or can be handled. However, I always encourage people to attend meetings, call or email me any time with questions, concerns or comments.
