I served on the school board for 13 years and am in my second term on city council. I own a small business with my brother and another partner. I went to school for Psychology and have my masters in Counseling Psychology. I believe these experiences have given me the skills I need to be a successful Representative, including how to listen, ask difficult questions, see big-picture challenges, and find sustainable solutions.
I would propose an overhaul of the current tax structure so we are not using property taxes as the mechanism for funding schools. Combined with a foundation formula, this would allow us to retire the current model that pits property owners against schools and provide a baseline funding level for every student, rather than having each district decide how much the town can afford to pay. I also believe regional high schools and larger districts would create economies of scale and improve the quality of public schools. That said, I would encourage collaboration rather than forced consolidation.
This is definitely an issue that needs balance. We want to preserve our lush green hills and sparkling streams, and we also want to build affordable housing. I believe the revised Act 181 does a good job of encouraging more growth in downtown districts with existing infrastructure. As someone who lives and works in a city, this makes sense to me. For more rural development, I would want to listen to representatives from these areas to understand how to properly balance land-use rules and state zoning laws to encourage more housing while also protecting what makes Vermont so special.
