I'm a second-term Brandon Selectboard member and I've also served as an elected Library Trustee and worked on several other boards in committees in Brandon. I've also been a professional state legislative analyst, host regular community events, and have renovated my own home.
I oppose closing local schools, particularly elementary schools, wherever possible. Moving to a foundation formula and expanding shared services via CESAs seem to be the best way forward as far as direct educational system changes go. However, the only way to get education costs under control would be to get health insurance costs under control. A huge segment of recent increase in school budgets has been due to out-of-control health insurance increases. I support moving towards universal primary care and, eventually, moving away from a profit-driven healthcare system.
While Act 181 and its reforms were controversial, where it ended up--leaving rural land more or less as it was and promoting infill development in town centers--is essentially the right move. We should be focused on medium-density housing in areas that are already built up, including incentivizing ADUs and duplexes/multi-generational housing, making shared ownership of a plot of land less complicated, and developing a skilled trade workforce that can meet the demand.
