I’ve been a Lamoille County resident for over forty years. I was a member of the Hyde Park Elementary School District Board for ten years, with three as Chair. Professionally, I have a B.S. from Champlain College and an MBA from Indiana University. I’ve been a government technology strategist for over 35 years, working at both the State and Federal levels. I’m committed to doing the right thing, even when no one is looking and even if it doesn’t benefit me. This is something I’ll never compromise on. I find joy in a job well done and actually get excited when I have a thorny problem to solve. I am one who follows the facts and data and then applies a healthy amount of disciplined imagination to come up with creative solutions.
Because of our small size, we will have a hard time getting the economies of scale possible heavily populated areas. I think we have done a good job controlling costs and still providing a quality education. Therefore, I would not keep trying different variants of the same playbook. We need to try new things I would work to rein in health care costs with Universal Primary Care. Rather than focusing on how little we can spend, I would focus on how equitably we can pay for it, and this means looking at ways to pay for education with broad based taxes like income tax and moving away from property taxes. We need to recognize that the most expensive education is substandard education.
There is no silver bullet, this will take a lot of things done well. We need to encourage more manufactured housing. We need to allow towns to create preapproved areas with a preapproved selection of home designs so that if someone selects from the preapproved offerings, they can have a permit in a day. We need to fund our tech centers to grow the workforce. We need to provide creative financing options that incentivize empty nesters to downsize.
