Candidate For Office
Pam McCarthy
I am an experienced leader and a dedicated community member who is committed to public service. I have a Master's in Educational Leadership from UVM. I have co-managed a small business in St. Albans with my family, and have led local and statewide nonprofit organizations that serve children and families. As a Vermont Agency of Human Services Field Director in Franklin and Grand Isle counties, I have led systems change efforts to create more holistic, responsive, and effective supports for everyone served, from pregnancy through elder care. I have served on many boards and advisories, and am a skilled collaborator and solution-finder. I am excited to be a new voice for St. Albans, standing up and speaking out for everyday Vermonters.
It's clear that the current system of funding education in Vermont is unfair, unaffordable, and unsustainable. Healthcare is the biggest cost-driver, so the efforts to rein in the costs of insurance and treatment must be prioritized. In order to succeed in reinforcing public school quality and achieving the cost savings we need, consolidation has to be seriously considered, and must include local stakeholders in the process. Change is necessary. Those most impacted need to be part of creating change that improves folks' outcomes AND reduces costs. This is challenging, time consuming work. The coming year will need us to lead boldly and make well-informed choices to improve our public education system and reduce our crushing tax burden.
Building in areas planned for growth, with an eye towards energy efficiency and ease of transportation will benefit communities and the environment. Rehab of existing buildings should be incentivized. We should advance the efforts to have pre-approved home designs that could be built more rapidly. We should keep exploring emerging housing options, especially those that allow folks to comfortably downsize, freeing up larger homes for families. With the passage of Act 152 amending Act 181, it should be easier to build housing in areas planned for growth while continuing long-standing environmental protections in other areas. Listening to community members about how best to create more housing while preserving our environment is the 1st step.
