Candidate For Office
Natalie Cashen
I bring lived experience, community involvement, and a strong commitment to listening. Growing up in poverty gave me firsthand insight into how decisions about housing, education, healthcare, and the cost of living affect families struggling to make ends meet. In Milton, I volunteer as an assistant coach for the high school girls varsity soccer team and serve on the Cemetery Advisory Committee. I am analytical, open-minded, and willing to do the work to understand complex issues. Most importantly, I believe a representative should listen to the people they serve and ensure the voices of both Milton and Georgia are heard in Montpelier.
Controlling education costs should focus on reducing overhead, not diminishing the quality of education students receive. I support expanding shared services for transportation, administration, special education, purchasing, and other functions where regional cooperation can save money. Vermont should also modernize its education funding system so resources are distributed more predictably and equitably based on student needs. I support reviewing administrative costs and staffing efficiencies, while protecting teachers, classroom resources, and student services. Any school merger or consolidation should demonstrate real savings and educational benefits rather than simply shifting costs or weakening local communities.
Vermont can address its housing shortage without sacrificing the landscapes and natural resources that define our state. I support simplifying permitting and allowing greater housing density in existing town centers and areas with infrastructure to support growth. We should encourage redevelopment of underused properties and make it easier to build smaller homes, multifamily housing, and accessory dwelling units. At the same time, development should be directed away from flood-prone areas, important wildlife habitat, forests, and productive farmland. Land-use reform should make it easier to build housing where it makes sense while preserving Vermont’s rural character and environment.
