Importantly, the Sheriff isn't my boss.
I have extensive experience in management, facilitation, restorative justice, public speaking, and community building. I'm also in my second term as Inspector of Elections, so my integrity, ability to serve all constituents, and dedication to Democracy are vetted.
I have skills to see the department through to a new Sheriff should it be required (it's never happened in Chittenden County's history).
I hold the firm belief that in this divisive time in our nation we cannot let any position be ceremonial (do nothing). I want to work with the Sheriff's department and the public to increase transparency, communication, and build relationships and trust. Vermonters deserve to count on public safety for all.
This question's appropriate for a Sheriff transition, as High Bailiff has no official duty unless the Sheriff is arrested or suddenly incapacitated. Only then, they step in to short-term oversee the department. This is crisis management vs. the day to day duties of the sheriff. Should it be required, I'd know who to trust and rely on in the department to oversee different operational areas while I communicated with the Governor, public, press, and any legal representatives. I'd hold space for, and if necessary, protect the employees of the Sheriff's department as they navigate unexpectedly losing their boss, plus hold space for department employees interested in being considered for Sheriff. I'd simultaneously keep the public informed.
High Bailiff does not enforce the law.
I have already reached out to begin to build a relationship with the Sheriff. I know that he is committed to his duty to ensuring public safety, so working with me to build a relationship with the public while alleviating growing public fear and suspicion must be something he has a true interest in creating. Independent from the department, I bring an objective voice.
I have often played this role of objective observer, communicator of truth both hard and beautiful, visioner and creator of new programs to build community, and leader of challenging and important discussions. Building bridges will take all of us. I am committed to my part in it.
